Hi,
I've got a question for Jeb. I feel like I know you Jeb. I've been on the e-type lovers list for several years and have read a lot of your informative as well as humorous posts. I have a '70 FHC waiting in the wings while I finish up my '80 MGB and my '79 MGB LE. On my '79 the choke was not working. Upon disassembly I found the small brass piston to be frozen in place. I damged it while trying to dislodge it. Anyway, I found a replacement and decided while I was there that I'd convert to a manual choke. I've completed the installation , but have only partial choking. When I installed the brass piston I was unsure of the alignment of the holes in the piston and those in the body of the carb. What do you think?
Godspeed,
Mike

Mike,
The position of the sliding valve or piston as you call it is not subect to alignment problems due to the overlapping lever which "meshes" with the valve. If you are only getting partial operation go back and make sure that you have followed the manufacturers instructions for the cable installation. I'll admit it is a bit obtuse.
Make sure that the tiny little o-ring at the tapered end of the valve is in good condition. Also make sure that you have not over-opened the idle adjusting air bleed screw. This may limit the vacuum action at the choke body.
Dave
