smoking engine

I have just recently purchased a 2006 Jaguar XK8-I have noticed that upon starting it, I get blue smoke out of the exhaust- Is this common for jag engines- Thanks to all

I think most motor heads would agree that blue smoke is oil and black smoke is rich fuel mixture. A friend has a 2000 XK8 and it does not emit smoke at crank up. Are you sure the smoke is blue? If it is really cold, you may have an overly rich mixture from the choking system producing the smoke and some minor adjustments should eliminate it. There are a lot of reasons that can blue smoke on start up; none are very plasent so I started with some minor thing. Is the car new or in warranty? How many miles has it logged?

I really don't have any experience on Jag engines but it would be my guess that a valve seal could have been faulty or missaligned causing the smoke on start up. I would ask the dealership? Bob

Jaguar has a strange tendency to eliminate valve stem seals on their motors as the design matures. The XJ40 went through this evolution. Ask your dealer if the 2006 V8 has valve stem seals. The lack of them would cause a puff of blue smoke upon startup. I would deem it grounds for a recall.

Jack,
You are absolutely correct about the AJ6 and AJ16 engine in the XJ40. BUT, that engine usually didn't start to puff smoke until it was well into the 100,000 mile range and a number of years down the road.
I would think a 2006 that is puffing blue smoke has a soon to be serious engine problem that should be looked at as soon as possible. I would assume that it is still under warranty

Your 100K mileage is about correct as a rule but can happen sooner than that. I agree that a new car with that kind of oil leakage is in trouble.
