Planetary Gear Removal

I am trying to remove one of the planetary gears so I can install a new thrust washer in the overdrive. Just how do you get one of those pins out that hold in the gears?
I may have just found the answer: drill it out. What kind of pin do you replace it with?
Thanks
Jerry

Re: planetary gear removal, Overdrive question?

I don't have my shop manual handy, but I recall something about it in the manual. Before you drill, you might ask Tom Monaco at Tom's Import Toys (https://tomsimport.com/) or David Nock at British Cars Specialists (http://www.britishcarspecialists.com/index.php). Both are generous with advice (and BCS is in Stockton). The planetary gears have to be aligned 'just so' for reassembly and, again, it's in the manual.

Do not drill it out. Use a pin punch to drive it inward. When it has gone in as far as possible, use a dremel to cut the exposed portion off using a carbide bit. Repeat until it is completely removed and then pull the "axle" out of the carrier. You will need a repair kit with a new pin. After installing the new pin, you need to peen over the outer hole sufficiently to prevent the pin from working its way out while the carrier is spinning.

Thanks Craig, that was helpful. I was wondering about cutting with a dremel. The transmission and OD I am working on has 56000 miles on it and it looks very good. The best shape of any I have seen. But still the thrust washer at the bottom of the planetary gears was broken in the bottom of the sump. I will have to check for tolerances on the rebuild.
