Hi,

I thought it was about time I joined this forum as my search for information continually brought up solutions from this group which I could not access. Clearly there are some very knowledgeable people here.

I originally lived in the UK and moved to New Zealand in 1994. I brought my TR6 with me and although it was initially built by me in 1990 it went through a complete chassis up restoration in 2012. It was finished just in time for the new Bond film Skyfall and so it was registered as "TR006 - Licensed to Thrill".
The car is fully modified with a race engine bored out to 2.7l with forged pistons, modified metering unit, Toyota 5 speed gearbox, Nissan 300Z LSD, etc, etc.

My next project was to modify a Triumph Stag. The engine was tweaked with a high lift cam, edelbrock 500cfm carburettor, toyota five speed box and a datsun r200 LSD. All chrome trim removed and a custom spoiler built at the front. Originally Carmine red I changed the paint to a similar but metallic maroon from Lexus and recessed the headlight to give a camaro look to the front.

I am currently restoring two Austin Healeys from scratch. This has been ongoing for five years now and the first is nearing completion. It has been built as close as possible to the original specification and I hope to enter a concours here in March. The second car is being modified and the engine has already been built to race spec. Again there is a five speed toyota box but so far nothing else on the running gear has changed. It will have telescopic shocks, minilite spin on wheels and over riders instead of bumpers. This car is being built to a BJ8 trim spec with wood dash. Although I have rebuilt the centre console to house 4 gauges.

My daily driver is a tuned Golf R which produces around 330 bhp.
My fun car is a 1992 Subaru wrx rebuilt to sti spec.
And our Saturday night cruiser is a 2006 jaguar XJR.

Prior to Covid we would come over to the UK in the summer and visit Healey, TR Register or Stag nationals.

So I've been playing with Triumphs and now Healeys since 1983 so I know my way around the classic car scene and look forward to sharing information.

My first request is for information relating to the installation of the soft top for the Austin Healey BJ7. I have yet to see a photo of how the vinyl attaches to the drain rail. This has to be the weirdest design I have ever seen. The idea of the roof is to keep water out. Not let it in and use a guttering system to send it back out!

I will post some more photos of the cars once I have downsized them.

Cheers

Barry

Hi Barry and welcome to the British Car Forum. Your TR6 looks fantastic!
Be sure to check out the Triumph and Austin Healey sections of the forum for help whenever you need it.
You live in a beautiful part of the world. Breakfast at Vic’s Cafe and visiting Akaroa are some of my favorite memories.
Post some additional pics of your other cars.

Question: What are those two items on the front of the bonnet?

Hello Barry

Welcome to the forum.

That is a great looking TR6. Interesting front and rear bumpers.

You will find the Triumph section is very active so you are sure to get plenty of tips and advice there. With all that work on the TR6 I am sure you will have much to contribute to the section.

Hi,

All exterior panels with the exception of the doors are fiberglass. The hood is fixed down with four sliding clips.

Thanks Basil,

It really is quite fantastic to drive. Over 200 bhp with a flat torque curve there is power on hand at all times. Bridgestone RE003 tyres are the best road race tyre, which I now have to import from Australia as 195 60 15 size is no longer available here.

The TR is well travelled having been to France, Belgium and Germany in Europe and toured both North and South islands of New Zealand.

I do miss driving through France though, where the locals would run out of their houses and shout Allez! Allez! as we roared through their towns en route to the Le Mans 24 hour race.

Five years ago I bought two rusted out Austin Healeys. They were pretty much beyond repair but I took on the project. The first car was in two halves and the second car was supposed to be the chassis donor. Turns out that chassis was stuffed so I had to get a new one made. I made some enquiries and found out that I had sufficient import documentation to build a second car. So I decided to build two. The first one to standard spec and remain LHD. The second convert to RHD and modify.

Really looking forward to the second Healey as that will be an awesome car. The steering has been modified to rack and pinion from a Subaru Leone. Steering column and electrics from a TR6. I found a brand new aluminum cylinder head which has had the chambers redesigned to create a far better gas flow than it originally had. In fact it was 30% less gas flow than a standard head which is why the owner sold it and put a 2 litre Nissan turbo engine in his car instead.

I have attached some photos of the current status.
The photos are of the new second car chassis, toyota gearbox fitment, modifying the gearbox tunnel to suit the gearstick location, aluminum head after porting, the finished engine and the triple weber set up. The engine bay will require some mods to suit the weber air filters. The car is with the steering specialist making the conversion from left to right hand drive. I will post photos when that is complete.

This car has a redesigned aluminum radiator to suit the new steering configuration and a modified aluminium fuel tank which holds an extra 2 gallons of fuel. I also found a brake servo from a Mk2 jaguar which has been rebuilt ready to be fitted to the car.

Cheers
