GT6 Looking to sell - in progress restoration

Hi guys, i haven't done anything with my GT6 MK3 in quite some time (10+ years?), so it seems like i should pass it along to someone who will use it.

I was hoping i could get some help on how to best list something like this, as it has quite a few "new" parts from Rimmer and other places. Stuff like brand new radiator, overdrive tranny and calipers from Rimmer, and nicely rebuilt distributor and carbs.

Not looking to make money on it, but also don't want to give it away for free.

Thanks!

Seller beware. Many SCAMERS out there. Start with this web www.IC3.gov that will be a heads up for you. as for sites; Bring a Trailer is safe. some parts suppliers have sale pages. Sprits Bits in Ca good also. When I went to sell my MG B I got 4 scams one even sent a check for $5,00.00 over the asking price saying it was to pay shipper to East coast ( it only cost $1,500.00 to ship there ) Bank check was bad as was the Bank. NOTE When contacted get as much information as they will give you I they refuse any information at all be careful.
It may start like this I will give and extra $ 500.00 to take it off the market. Then it will be and extra money for some reason on top of your asking price even if they try to talk you down. You want to get a phone number and call it. Or have them call you I told them no phone call no deal. They may say it is going overseas and say here is the check hold the car for 30 days or something like. They do not want your car they want your bank info. When they asked if I had got the check by FedEx and cashed it I said yes I took it to the FBI. If you go so far as to get a check put it in a copy machine Bank checks can not be copied a water mark will come up VOID. And now business checks have what is called a hot spot that will watermark when held. This is just the start many more out there. If cash to some one in Or. Do it at a bank.
I talked to a friend who sell cars now a then. He does sales at his Bank, if not his bank he opened an account did the sale and closed it the next day taking all his money then. I got all cash on the MG took it to the Bank then gave the title .

Assume it is not a running car? It's tough to sell a restoration in-progress; it is hard to put a value on the work done / the work remaining.

Might want to reach out to local clubs, to see who wants a GT6 and can poke around the project and get a good understanding of the work remaining.

Madflyer brings up some good points on scams... cash in hand is always better than a check! Seems a lot of folks are writing bad "bank" checks - it takes a few weeks to bounce, and when they do the money comes back out of your account and the merchandise is long gone. The good scammers will overpay, get the merchandise and have you write a good check for the difference. Now they have your goods and your money. Arghholies!

Good luck!

I've tried reaching out to the local club, the PTOA (Portland triumoh owners association), but haven't been able to get any responses. Granted, now that i'm writing this, they might have a tiny forum too.

And i do know an in-progress restoration is a tough sell, but the alternative i imagine is to scrap it all but the few big pieces, like the engine, trans, dif, etc. and scrap the rest. But the idea of that hurts my insides.

I've probably spent $6k on it.

I'll see if i can get some pictures. And i appreciate all the input! Just want to find it a good home with someone who cares.

Edit: correct, not a running car at the moment.

AS you are in Oregon call this friend of mine and past President of the TR club in Portland. He also has a shop and many contacts. ( Ray Marty 503-357-5640 ) tell him Andy from Reno sent you.
There are two GT 6's in Reno I was thinking about one was a running SCCA car and the other is a parts car. Tell me more about yours. triumph73kill:atatt.net
As for cash sale I know a friend that sold sound equipment on Craig's list $700.00 a person gave him 7 $100.00 bill they were all fake bills Dam One of my club members uses a bill check pen on all sales. It is true that some people do not know some one has past them a bad bill. I do not know where trust starts or stops.

Andy, I modified your email so people can still read it but "bots" can't. When you post your email in the open forum it is an invitation for bots to harvest it and it will cause even more spam than you already have. (The @ sign is just the first smiley in the smiley menu :at )

Look at auto parts on Craigslist Portland Oregon.
Triumph parts.... there is a guy from Scappoose, Oregon
He almost always has a Parts ad. His name is Mike.
You have to email him and he will call you back.
I have sold to him and bought from him. Found him
to be a very square shooter. He might be of help.
Wish you well.

MadF, you touched on all my concerns, too. A couple things have worked out for me; (1) get a wire transfer. That gets around the problem with checks; (2) I have met a seller at the bank where we both had accounts, and just did a $$ transfer there. Of course, that works only for local sales.

If anyone starts talking about overpaying, drop him like a hot rock, whatever the rest of the story.

But I've also had good experiences just trusting my instincts. I always talk to a seller or buyer before closing the deal, and I have found that open, friendly people have always been safe to deal with. This has not happened to me (yet!), but if anyone started to push back against reasonable requests, that would be a red flag.

I've found that Craigslist is top-heavy with flakes and scammers. While I have used it occasionally, generally I steer clear of it.

Funny (maybe not so) my wife and I just had a Craigslist Buyer (scammer) show up to buy a used Fridge. He started trying to load up the fridge and I asked him for the cash. He said "what are you talking about, this was listed in the freebies section" (it wasn't). He started getting very upset saying we had changed the ad & yada yada. My neighbor just got home from work (he is a officer that trains the swat team) and came over to ask if we were having a problem. Nothing like a guy with a badge carrying two or three guns to slow down a scammer...
Apparently some people will think they have listed the ad wrong and let these folks drive off with their stuff.

It sesames like now days any way trusting people gets harder and harder. It is almost better to give something away as to selling to others. Having strangers come to your home can come into question. A garage sale can leave you wide open as to what you do have worth taking. I sold a stove and dishwasher off a posted flyer they wanted to see what else I had in the house ( NOT )

One time my wife was at a gas station and a guy with a broken fan belt wanted some money to buy a new one as he was stuck on the road. Well yes she said lets go in side and I will buy you one. You can guess what happened next. When I lived and worked in San Francisco many years ago. There was a guy on the news every now and again that would be panhandling and to aware. I thought how stupid could people be until I was going through a big downtown hotel with a few guys and this well dressed man showing me a envelope and asked if I had some change to mail his letter. I did and as we walked away one of the guys said didn't know who that was. DAM. I was leaving the LA airport parking garage years ago and a guy stop me and said he did not have enough money to get his car out and if I could help No I said I only do credit cards. It has only gotten worse. Madflyer

Getting back on topic... Flinkly - did you decide on an asking price? You said you've spent around $6K on it. Does that include the purchase of the car? Not sure if it helps, but currently on eBay there's a '69 project car with bidding at $2250, and a rough '68 without a transmission for $6000 BuyItNow.

Sorry, just got around to pulling my files I have for it. The Overdrive and matching Diff rebuilt by Canley was $2k, and have another $1.5 to $2K in new or professionally rebuilt parts, which is what i'd like to recoup. don't want to think about what i've spent on the engine work (over $2k i'm sure), and all the odd parts besides the $3.5 to $4K i mentioned above (new clutch, new brake lines, new wiring harness, all the nuts, bolts, washers, hoses, bearings to have a complete chassis).

So all in all, looking to sell it for $4k. tough sell for the the times and the fact that it's all torn down, i'm sure. Sounds like it might be going to a re-seller as a pile of parts. just as long as it doesn't just get scrapped, i guess.
