1275 Distributors

I'm looking for info, anyone who has experience or advice with a 45D4 distributor in a 1275 engine. I have a recently rebuilt 1275 (1974 vintage). The 45D4 was stock to the 1500 engine. My car is running good but I'm trying to fine tune it and set the proper timing. All the research I have done suggest the timing for a 1275 with 25D4 distributor should be set to 13 degrees BTC @ 1000rpm. The 45D4 in a 1500 engine should be set to 2 degree ATC. If anyone out there has worked with this setup , the 45D4 in a 1275, I would appreciate any info/ feed back you can offer. Thanks, Kevin

Hey Kevin, you might want to repost this in the Spridget forum.

The 2 deg ATC should only apply to the 1500 - and was because of the pollution control stuff. It also had vacuum retard instead of vacuum advance. I would go with the 1275 setup. If you really want to fine tune your distributer send it to Jeff Schlemmer at Advanced Distributors - http://advanceddistributors.com/wordpress1/ - he will recurve it for todays gas among other things.

Kevin -

I took the liberty of moving the thread over here to the Spridget side, as the folks over here will be more familiar with the 1275 engine timing requirements.

And as J-P noted, Jeff can work wonders with distributors! And welcome to BCF!

J-P, Mickey, Thanks for your response, I appreciate your input! Also thanks for your help with my message, I'm still trying to find my way around the forum. I was concerned that the centrifugal advance springs in the 45D4 may be different than the 25D4 and the distributor would require a different setting to function properly. Anyway my plan at this point is to try different settings to see which gives the better performance. I'll post my results when I get a dry day here and I'm able to get my car out. Kevin

Hmmm... You raise an interesting point - one which I'd bet many haven't considered. I hadn't! Do let us know what you find.

JP, Thanks again for the info. I checked out both the links you provided, both very helpful. I hadn't dug this deep into how distributors operate, there's always more to learn. Thanks again!
