and what should I do.

Had the starter off the car today and after I had reinstalled it - I found this on the ground under the car.

I think <think> it might be a guide peg for the starter to mate to the back plate or the metal 'thickness' plate that aligns the starter but I don't really know.

Any ideas? and if it is related to the starter do I need to remove it? It doesn't fit over the bolts that I know for sure.

thanks all!

For a project with N parts, there is always N+1 (or N-1) when completed.
Not sure what it is. Clip? Bushinig?

Looks like a guide fell out of bellhousing. Keep handy in case starter moves around.

It would be helpful to know the year / model of the car and the part's dimensions: ID, OD, length. It appears to be a locating bushing. Did you also have alternator / generator off at the same time?

Funny you should say that - another person (elsewhere) has speculated that it is from the alternator and that it may just have been hanging around the starter for who knows how long. Apparently the 1500 doesn't have a locating pin on the starter. Interesting I have not had a Lucas alternator for as long as I have been driving the car, so, who knows?
