TR2/3/3A Seat Installation

I am finishing the restoration of a 54 TR-2 Long Door. I have installed the seat rails and am beginning to install the seats. Before I add the seats, the top rails slide back and forth with little effort. After I screw the seats down to the rails, I can not move the seats ? They won't go backwards or forwards. I can't seem to discover where they are binding? Would putting some extra washers on top of the sliding rail raise the seat high enough so it will not bind?

Any helpful suggestions??

You must use a ruler to install the floor rails perfectly parallel to each other. There is enough slop in the bolt holes to allow the rails to be installed off from each other, and then they bind when trying to slide.

Yes they are a pain. I leave the seat rails a little lose for a while, snug but not too tight. Then, I move seat back and forth for some time letting them find a comfortable parallel position and snug them slowly. Drive it around and move the seat with your weight on it. IMHO they do not have to be super tight. The seats are a weak point on these cars and the back of the seat will sage down below the rail and catch on the rail also. Perhaps something needs to be put on the back floor if you have the seat back all the way and the carpet in place.

I had the same problem with my 56 TR3. I solved by adding a 1/4" steel spacer (short piece of tubing) under the seat rails. I put a small fender washer on top of the carpet, spacer on top of that, then the seat rail, bolt down trough the floor to a cage nut or large fender washer and lock nut. With three bolts per rail, they don't wiggle around and both seats slide back and forth the length of the rails. I got the spacers in the "Hillman" fastener drawers at Lowes.
Good luck!
