Wiper Motor and Arm Adjustment

Hi All,

A friend is restoring his Healey and completed the renewal of the motor and arms. How is the motor and arms adjusted to provide appropriate blade sweep and, when shut off, continues to the off viewing area home position?

Thanks all,
Ray (64BJ8P1)

Ray - Adjust on the bench! I found this out the hard way when the guy who rebuilt my wipers didn't bother to position the park and I installed it in the car like that.

Rotate the top cap to the desired park position by trial and error.

With the motor on the left and wipers to the right, as if you're in the car, you want it to park at the leftmost position.

Once it parks on the left, you can install it and fiddle with the positions of the wiper arms on the splines. What you don't want is, when switched on, for the wiper to continue downward onto the hood.

My wiper motor didn’t stop where it was supposed to after I took it apart for cleaning and new grease. From my memory, a friend told me to run the motor and stop it and then remove the wiper blades and and reinstall them in the OFF position. It worked.

I wonder if anyone makes arms that have an angle in them so that the blades, when parked, will parallel the frame and not stick up into my field of vision.

Alternatively, remove wiper arms altogether and apply Rain X or similar to windshield. A friend of mine, Crazy Larry, did this to his new Jaguar XR8 because the wiper arms, according to him, "spoiled aesthetics of original design intent".

Agree with Gonzo - RainX is actually a viable substitute for wipers.

A neighbor and I did the California Mille a couple of years ago in his 1955 Porsche Speedster. This involved several days of driving around northern California in the mist and drizzle. The speedster's 6V wipers gave up 1/2 hr into this. We found that RainX works well even on fine mist, let alone drizzle and rain.
