The horn button on my BN6 non-adjustable steering wheel is chipped and cracked, and sticks out on one side. I would like to send it out for restoration. How is it removed? Will it require extracting the stator tube? Thanks!

Yes Nevets, You will have to remove the stator tube, you will have to remove the Olive nut on the gear box,and disconnect the wires from the turn signal wires. I'm sure others will chime in. Good luck and take your time

Nevets, the Moss catalog shows it to be similar to the adjustable button. I've had my adjustable-type out. You take a single-edge razor blade and carefully insert it under the edge of the chrome bezel (44) and carefully pry it up. It's a friction fit in the bakelite ring (42).

Steve G, so if I understand you correctly, I can simply pry off the horn button with no need to remove the trafficator & stator tube?

If all you want to check out is the horn push, you can do as Steve explains. There will be a spring and a metal disc below. One of the three tabs might be broken, allowing it to pop out on one side. Do not be tempted to remove any screws at this point - you will cause internal problems. For further issues, the whole unit with the stator must come out.

Thanks all for the help. On a related note, if I decide to replace the steering wheel with a Derrington style wood steering wheel, could my current horn button be used? I'm thinking not, but wanted to be certain before sending it out to be restored.

If there's a non-adjustable hub available for the Derrington, the horn button should fit. Make sure you don't get the adjustable hub by mistake.

Go to the Moto-Lita web site. The non-adjustable hub for a wood or leather rim wheel is listed ( B6, I believe ). Others may carry this, and your stator and horn button / control head is used.

Thanks Steve. Yep, it's a Moto-Lita; Mike modifies them for his wheels. Took a while to get the wheel as the hubs were back-ordered, and there's a discrepancy on the depth that barely allows the locking nut good purchase. Here it is in the car:

Your car looks nice with the dash painted body color (as opposed to vinyl matching the interior). I'm surprised it's not done more often, even if it deviates from the holy concours guidelines ;)

I took mine a step further; I can imagine the engine-turned treatment would look stunning against a black background...

Personally I would not change a thing. It's well earned patina.

Maybe I will retain the 'well earned patina' on the controller, however the horn button is badly chipped. Since the steering wheel is a reproduction, I am also thinking a new Moto Lita wheel would be a very nice addition. And as long as it's all apart, why not get everything spruced up. We shall see. I am a procrastinator, so there is a chance that well earned patina will not be lost.
