Where Were You 50 Years Ago Today?

This topic from another forum, just for fun. I realize some of you weren't around, but most of us were. I'll kick it off:

Had just moved from Baton Rouge to New Orleans, transferring from LSU to LSUNO (now University of New Orleans), and getting ready to start third year of college. Dating the one who would become SWMBO. Working at New Orleans Country Club serving beer and snacks on the golf course as well as soft drinks and snacks at the swimming pool and doing the same at parties - fun job! My buddy and I worked one Hawaiian-themed party, and there was a fair amount of leftover Mai-Tais and Fog Cutters that the manager said we could take home. (Legal age at the time was still 18). Grabbed our girlfriends and partied at Mardi Gras Fountain on Lake Pontchartrain!

Good times!

13 and starting Jr high. Being a small town Ohio boy, and no internet or 1000 channels I was barely aware of British cars then beyond knowing the Brits did make cars. But if they didn't appear on the 3 networks some evening, well I just had no idea what they were. I did read "The Red Car" in that general time period so knew the name MG TC and TD, but had only a general sense of what they looked like and no real concept of size. But it did make me want something like that and in 74 when a Sunbeam came up locally for sale, and I'd never seen it before either, that was the ticket.. So I've have the "sickness" since then..

Just about where I am now except we were living in my first house and working out of my building in downtown Stamford - demolished in 2016 for the construction of the new police station. Our family car was a 1969 Dodge Dart hardtop and my car was a Datsun 510 sedan. I was 47 years old. I also spent much time fishing in my Boston Whaler and the tennis boom was just starting and later on, the boat was sold and I was heavily into tennis.

Still in the Marines, at Camp LeJune, N.C. until Dec 1970, came back to St. Louis, MO area and met my wife, been in the area since. Now both retired, for a few years, until her 93 yr old Mom expires, looking to Alabama.

Had been in our home in Kirkwood for almost 4 years with my 1st wife and 9 month old son. Worked for St Louis County government. Drove a 69 Pontiac LeMans, that we had traded a 67 BRG Austin Healey in for and a 62 VW Beetle. Took me 7 years before my 2nd wife and I bought a 66 BJ8. Been in and around A/H ever since.

47 fifty years ago, hey if that isn't a typo and you're really 97, respect for making it so far.

You spend the spare time in the doorway waving a cane and yelling "get off my lawn you durn kids"??....

Had just graduated from high school (June 1970). Was supposed to go to my 50th reunion next week, but all that has been postponed a year.

I was just starting Naval Nuclear Power School at Mare Island. I had just bought a 1970 Plymouth Duster 340 and was terrorizing Highway 780 from Benicia to Vallejo.

1970 was my first year in "High School" - 10th grade. That's also the year I got a job at an Arlens Department store as a stock boy, but later became Manager of the Mens/ Boys department (pretty big deal for a 16 year old). I bought my very first car then too - a 1963 Pontiac Catallina. I was a real geek (that hasn't changed) and was deeply into CB Radio and had the walls of my room covered in "QSL cards" from all over (even some other countries). It was a great hobby and kept a young teenager out of trouble (except tht my CB rig wasn't exactly legal :angel2: )

9 years old. I knew about cars but I don't think girls had even been invented then - at least not yet in my world.

Bought my first MGB at the beginning of my freshman year, 1968. My first car. I'd had two years of college by 1970, BORED with the 'mandatory' eighth grade math, history and English. I'd been working for the local newspaper as a photographer and part time in a Ma & Pa camera store. Got my draft notice fifty years ago last week, went to the USAF recruiter and off to Lackland, Texas. Got to take a "By-pass Specialist Test" in Basic and got a "Direct Duty" assignment with Aerospace Audio Visual Service as a still photo guy. Married First Wife (college romance) out of Basic and during the Air Force time we'd owned two MGB's and her MGB-GT, I found my Elan S-3 in 1972 and had to sell one of the roadsters. But I'd been involved with LBC's since childhood, Dad's pals had T-series MG's and Jags as I was growing up, it was an early influence! Someplace in the family archives is a photo of me at about age two, taking a screwdriver to a jag XK-120 doorlatch. Sure I had NO idea what I was doing, but the image is kinda prophetic.

50 years ago today - August 13, 1970.

I'd just moved from my home in Fort Worth, to Edinburg, Texas, to start my K-12 teaching job.

Talk about a culture shock - most of my students were kids of migrant farm workers. Whole families lived in two room shacks in the "colonia" (poor people's neighborhood).

My eyes were opened.

I was a sophomore in college... my draft number was 52 and I was 19 years old and scared to death about keeping my grades up to stay in school. With the very real reality of being drafted I decided to learn to fly and started my lessons at Peter O'Knight airport.
While at college I met my girl friend and this month we'll be married for 47 years.
50 years ago the only wheels I had was my trusty Lambretta TV175 which I still have. The following year I bought my first car... a 1971 Ford Torino.
