One of our pups, Muffin, is almost totally blind due to cataracts caused by a late diagnoses of diabetes. The one on the left is Muffin. I just made an appointment to have her eyes checked, as there is a specialist in Tulsa that believes he can restore her sight in one eye possibly both. Check up and tests on the 17th, if the tests go well, were going to have him give her some, hopefully all her sight back.
Both pups are sweethearts and we would do anything for them!

One of our Dobes had that surgery. What a difference it made for him.

Good luck with the check up and surgery if they can do it.

How old are they?
We have a Toy Poodle who has developed cataracts over the last year or so. One eye was OK up until about March this year but her vision is going. She turned 15 in May and is also almost deaf or at least she does not respond to us calling her.
It is so hard to see them deteriorate like that.

David, their both 10 years old. Muffin used to be very active until she got sick, she just stopped eating and after 3 days I took her to the vet, that's when I found out she was diabetic. During the recover process, she lost 80% of her hair, had to be force fed a special semi liquid diet 4 times a day for 3 months plus 4 shots a day at the vets along with insulin shots twice a day. It is a 24/7 thing and life changing to us. Some folks might not understand why we have spent so much of our time, running back and forth to the vet for special shots. I won't get into what she has and continues to cost just to keep her on an even track. Our kids are gone and these pups are our, (kids) so to speak! Fortunately were in a position do whatever it takes.
Now I have a hard time waiting for her exam on the 17th which were hoping is positive and cataract surgery can be done on one or both eyes. With us, it's like a pair of kids waiting for Christmas! I'll post the results. :encouragement:
Never thought I'd love an animal so much!:rolleyes2:

I fully understand. Is she a diabetic? Is she under a vets care? Cataracts can be removed but if there is retina damage, as I understand, not much can be done.

She is under vet care and is not diabetic. Had a diabetes test again earlier this year. Probable just old age and she loved to lay out in the sun so that may have had an effect. She still gets around but we have to help her a lot now.
Do they just remove the cataract or do the IOL as well?

What a cute pup! David, I'm new to this procedure and know very little about it. Since this virus thing it's hard to get a one on one talk with the doctor, some services won't talk personally to anyone and all communications are over the phone. As I understand, this doctor does things more on a personal bases and folks who have used his services recommend him highly. We'll see!

Thank you. She has been a constant companion for 15 years now.
We are trying to make her remaining time as good as possible.

She did get to ride in the TR. Was not too impressed. Half the time hanging out the passenger side and the other half with her paws on my arm. She did have a harness on.

We had one who lived to 19. She was deaf and blind, so the squirrel had to come up into her face to get her to chase him. Even at her advanced age, if we opened the box of See's candy with her sleeping at the other end of the house, she would be right there.

Need to start a thread What does it cost to properly care for a Dog or Cat?

Like car restoration the initial cost is just a beginning. I would hate to list our outlay on our Toy poodle Sammie over the years. She was so worth every $ we spent on her we were repaid with unquestioning love and always there with a happy wag.

So true. Can't remember who I am quoting but "your dog is the only person who loves you more than you love yourself."

So true! Their affection is so rewarding, can make you smile regardless how you feel.

I'm at the point in life that a 15~20 year commitment to a furry friend would make me crazy. What would happen if it outlives me? Who would care for him/her properly?

But try as I might, somehow there's always been at least one. Now we care for three "occasional" cats. They were abandoned when a family a few doors away left their house to foreclosure. Ignorant, IMHO. They were skinny, hungry and stayed together. I couldn't see leaving them to forage, they'd been fed since kittenhood, human dependent, been "fixed" but were kept outdoors. They've now been with us for a few years, I've called them Lucy, Fred and Ethel. Lucy is an orange striped tabby, Fred is an all black guy and Ethel is a long-haired tortoiseshell. Fred and Ethel are WELL fed. Lucy is the active one, relatively svelte by comparison. They have the run of the place, can enter the house if they want, given canned food a couple times a day and are open-fed any time they choose, with dry food. Great to have them around, but they're not house cats. They do NOT like being kept indoors.

I'm an idiot, BTW, when it comes to cats or dogs.

We would love to get another dog, but like Doc, not sure it'd be prudent at our age. Main reason, though, is the presence of black bears where we live, and our property doesn't lend itself to putting up a fence for when "Lady" or "Tramp" would be outside. Good friend has two rescue dogs and I frequently visit to get my dog fix. Plus son and his family have one. Sorta virtual pet ownership!
