My first and last ride on a roller coaster was in 1947 when I graduated Ninth grade. It was on the either the Airplane coaster or the Dragon coaster at Playland in Rye, NY - I forget which. I was terrified and had my eyes closed from the time we hit the top of the first steep hill and plunged down. I was in the last car. I almost puked getting off and swore I'd never ride one again. One of those coasters was later torn down. The only other time I had a terrifying ride was in 1955 on the Mt. Van Hoevenberg Olympic bobsled run at Lake Placid. I had to sign a release before riding. Shut my eyes on that one too.

Rye Playland.... one of my favorite places as a kid. My pals and me used to take a friend’s ski boat across the L.I. Sound to Rye then anchor the boat and swim in.
Do you remember Freedom Land?

No. I looked it up = a short-lived amusement park in Baychester, Bronx.
I did the same thing with a friend's boat. We had two outboards on the back - his 2 horse Evinrude and my dad's 3.3 horse Evinrude twin. Across the Sound to Lloyd's Neck, anchored, climbed up the big sand cliff called Sandiggers and slid down. The cliffs are still there. My friend unfortunately is not. I took a picture from Greenwich Point with my Nikon P900 900 mm lens. If I can find it, I'll post it. The Sound is 6 miles across from Stamford, quite a bit closer from Rye and very narrow going into the East River.

I grew up in Great Neck. It was a short trip across to Rye.
Freedomland used to be right where Co-Op City now sits.

Back in the '50s, we'd make an annual trip from Texas to upstate NY. Always stopped at Storytown in Queensbury. Little Red Riding Hood ... sigh.

Last 'coaster ride for me was "The Hulk" IIRC, a decade ago at Universal Orlando. Da 'mits won some VIP passes in a radio contest. meh. Not much of a "thrill" IMHO. I've been 'wrung out' in aircraft from Citabrias to F-4's. No comparison. I'll keep the money for car parts.

Oh yeah doc... My T-34 aerobatics ride outa Peter O’Knight will never come close to any coaster.
I might have thrown-up if I knew which way up was :highly_amused:

Here's the Sandiggers photo. Taken from about 8 miles away on Greenwich Point. We climbed and slid down those cliffs. They're higher than they look here. Taken with a Nikon P900. I have better pictures of the moon and NY City from Greenwich Point. The Nikon was a disappointment. Battery kept going dead after only a few shots - and at the worst time. It sits in a drawer now - unused and unloved. I would sell it but I'm too lazy.

I guess I forget to upload picture. Senior moment. Here it is. Interestingly, it was created by the glacier that got about that far south and no further. That's where all the rocks came from - Connecticut.<img src="https://www.britishcarforum.com/bcf/attachment.php?attachmentid=64408&stc=1" attachmentid="64408" alt="" id="vbattach_64408" class="previewthumb align_0 size_fullsize" style="">

Always enjoyed Space Mountain at Disney. Being in the dark probable makes it seem faster.

David

It does, I once rode it in the light - and was also amazed how small it really is.
