BN2 Shift Lever Bushing Replacement

The shift lever on our BN2 is a little sloppy due to the nylon/brass bushing on the end of the shift lever. Since my carpeting on the tunnel is glued down very well I would like to change the bushing from the top. Are there any tricks to doing this through the top? I noticed in the parts book there are spacers and gaskets under the top plate, can they be reused if they are not torn? Any difference between the nylon or brass bushings?

The seal and spacers sit on studs, so you shouldn't have any problems unless the seal sticks to the underside of the retainer cup.

As long as the carpet is only glued to the tunnel, and not the floor panels, you shouldn't have any trouble removing the tunnel.

When the tunnel was put in it was very well sealed to the firewall and the floor, so removing it is a major problem. Although it can be removed I would like to know if it is possible to do it from the top without removing the tunnel.

It will be harder to remove and reinstall the shift boot than removing and reinstalling the shifter.
By the way, I hope the carpet isn't glued to the tunnel. You need to be able to fold the right front back to check/fill the gearbox oil.

I'm not sure you're replacing the right part. Gear shift slop is almost always caused by wear on the lever locating bolt. Moss #103 and 104.

I can feel the lever move around in the socket so I assumed it was the bushing which I have been told is a high wear item. Also, the shift boot is not sewed to the carpet, and is easy to removed exposing the hold down bolts.
