As with all of you my life has taken an unexpected turn and I am on literal lockdown.

I had some minor surgery to a nerve in my left elbow this past Tuesday and the Dr's instructions were to refrain from any strenuous activity including driving until my post-op visit which is next Thursday 3/27. I'm not very good at following instructions in general and yet this is a good time to get into the habit of social distancing if not isolation, so I have been 100% at home for the last 6 days and with the exception of being with my wife have only seen a couple of friends in the flesh.

I have a number of friends with whom I share a particular interest and we have set up a google hangout "room" where we can come together--either in a video or audio-only basis depending, on how one sign's in--to discuss our shared interest, and I find it very helpful to have that form of contact.

I regard this forum as another important and valuable personal asset and in addition to the general emails that I get from my friends and contacts I often check in here to see if anyone has posted anything that is being discussed, etc. I know we are to keep things to car-related topics and I certainly don't want this to become a place for discussions about "other issues" but I am hopeful that in our isolation we make full and better use of this asset. It would do me good to read someone's Healey problem of the day or learn about the little task that one of you is working on and is stuck behind, etc. etc. Bottomline, I guess I'm hoping to have more posts to read about and hopefully make contributions upon. My Healey is currently stored a few miles from my home in a rented garage and once I get my driving privileges back I hope to do some projects, etc in part to relieve my boredom. I will do my best to contribute here and hope that others do the same.

On a different noter--is it just me or has it become more difficult to sign onto the forum? I still have a sign-in name and password stored but it used to be that I just cliiked onto the saved icon and I was into the forum. Now it seems I must reenter my name and pw each time in order to sign on. Anyone else experiencing the same or similar difficulty?

I'm using FireFox on Windows 10 and it remembers the sign in as always - no change.

Michael - I feel your boredom "pain". My car has been in the body shop since the first of the year fixing the right front headlight area, which I crunched just before shipping the car to Deadwood last year. Since I finished the windshield overhaul nothing to discuss here.

Great post Michael. With everyone being isolated, online connections take on an even more important role in many of our lives. In addition to BCF, I hang out on several photography forums as well. I've been spending a lot more time watching video tutorials on Kelby One, for example, (a subscription-based photography forum with many subscription-only tutorials on every photo-related topic under the sun).

As for your log-in issue - that is probably related to an recent https change I made that had some unintended consequences. If you are getting to the forum using an existing bookmark, try this:

1. Log out
2. Delete any existing bookmarks
3. Come back to the forum by typing into your browser: https://www.britishcarforum.com/bcf/forum.php
4. Log in again and check the "remember me" box.
5. Re-bookmark that page.

Hope this helps.

Speaking of online meetings. As you know, I'm involved with NAMI as our state's program director. We had a training scheduled for several months to train new Family Suport Group facilitators. The training was scheduled for this weekend but the lady who was going to drive up from Las Cruces to Albuquerque to do the training has been ordered to remain in her home due to having been possibly exposed to COVID-19. Our solution: We had 6 people scheduled to take the training (I am one of them). We are all gathering at the NAMI Training room at our local NAMI affiliate. It's a large room and we have separated the tables to give each person more than 8 feet "social distance." We also used Clorox wipes to wipe down all surfaces, door knobs, etc. I also bought rubber gloves for the folks to wear. Then, I set up a big screen TV at the front of the room and hooked up my MacBook and connected with the "trainer" in her hime in Las Cruces using "Zoom." We had our first day of trainng yesterday (Saturday) and it worked really well! I'll be leavig in a few moments for the second (final) day of training.

I'm sure your wife, like mine, gave up a number of years ago. But, if you were to ask her nicely, I'm sure she'd dust off that long list of things she asked you to do but you never got around to! I did and now my feet don't touch the ground! That should keep you from getting bored for a month or six.

I also use Firefox to log on. The password and user name is encrypted and stored by Firefox not on the website. I think it's the same for Google. It usually asks you if you want to save the password when you first log in. If not you can input manually. Go to the menu (the 3 bars top rt corner), Choose:- Options - Privacy & Security, scroll down to Logins & Passwords and click on Saved Passwords. You can add your URL, etc.

Sorry if I'm teaching my grandmother to suck eggs!

You said: "I'm sure your wife, like mine, gave up a number of years ago. But, if you were to ask her nicely, I'm sure she'd dust off that long list of things she asked you to do but you never got around to!"

The primary difference between men and women is that whereas we think that we will never change them they always feel that they can change us.

My wife's list certainly would begin with my undergoing personality-transplant surgery. I've tried but cannot find a therapist who is able to perform the procedure, nor can I seem to do it myself, so I think I'll pass on asking that question.

Plus, all of a sudden my elbow hurts....

My wife of 33 years passed early January so I have been isolated for emotional reasons as well as virus reasons. However I have GREAT neighbors (thank you Johnski, a BJ8 owner) who have been doing whatever they can to be there for me. As I live at South Lake Tahoe where everything is shuttered down (restaurants, ski resorts, casinos, the works) we have snow covered forests where we snowshoe, cross country ski and of course blowing/shoveling the driveways and decks to keep us safe and busy. I know we will get through this and I am glad my wife did not have the pandemic to worry about as well as her health. By the second week after her death I had done everything I had put off doing on the BJ8. Then the house got spotlessly clean. Then lots of postponed repairs around the house. As past president and current vice president of the Golden Gate Healey Club I had hoped to be active as a distraction, but as you may be aware we had to cancel our Rendezvous and most of our events for the year due to the virus. Alas, I had done everything and then I get sequestered at home?? Not fair. Hasn't been a good year.

TH--

This is the first I hears of your partner's passing and I am so sorry, sincerely, to hear of your loss.

If my irreverent post back to AJ seems ungrateful please forgive me. The old saw "I cried because I had no shoes and then I met a man who had no legs" comes to mind.

Michael, please do not think I took offense. I was kind of expressing my self pity. Thank you for the kind words. She was not only my loss but those in the Healey world who knew her, she was there loss too.

Apologies for bringing back bad memories I was just trying to lighten the mood in depressing times.
Looking for positives you do live in a lovely part of the world. I spent 2 weeks in S Tahoe a few years ago, there are lots of worse places to live out this virus.

Keep safe y'all.

Actually, I have only wonderful memories of her. Especially when you add the Healey people she loved. She always wanted to be involved with the BJ8. She would help with anything she could like pulling the gear box, bleeding brakes or whatever. And boy, did she ever look good in the navigator seat. So, I was blessed with only the best memories. And thank you for the kind words.
This year, everything Healey has been canceled so I depend on this forum for my Helaey "fix".

TH, I too wish to extend my condolences; knowing the value of a good woman that if not sharing, at least tolerates my passion with cars is a lucky find.

Michael, does it have to be a Healey car project? I hope that you mend up fast, after having a recent tune-up myself, I can speak with experience about following the doctors directives__cautiously mixed in with your own knowledge of how well you mend...

This past Friday evening, sometime after 6:00 PM, I had the misfortune (?) of a brass fitting break in half__entirely too easily, in fact__for a car I am working on. In this particular case, the car is a 1998 M Rdstr (owned by a designer for Roush, contracted to Ford) that drove it down a few days before Christmas. Knowing full well that I was in recovery mode, and giving me ample time to work at my own pace. Among a laundry list of projects, one of them was redoing/upgrading the (Vortech centrifugal) supercharger setup. I had sent the compressor out for a shop to overhaul it (new bearings and seals, set geartrain clearances, etc.) and upgrade it with a billet turbine wheel.

When it returned, the oil-feed (a s/s -4 90* x 1/8 NPT on brass "jet" adapter) was not clocked correctly, and prevented the oil line from being reconnected. Attempting to hold the brass fitting with one wrench__so as not to damage its male threads or the aluminum housing it was threaded into__and rotate the 90* fitting nearly 1/2-turn with another one, it broke right off, leaving only the broken threaded portion left in the compressor housing! I mean, before I even applied any real effort to turn the 90* fitting! Fortunately, with the tension removed, the broken stub of threads was easily unscrewed from the housing. While tremendously inconvenient, given the day & time (not to mention prevailing social conditions...) I have to view it as a blessing in disguise!

Not being one to sit on my thumbs, I took a look around to see what I could use for making up another one...

I took this picture before shipping the compressor out, so I'd know how the fitting was oriented (and proof it was shipped with the unit)

20200221174412-dfde1af9-me.jpg

This is the way it was clocked upon return, almost 180* out

i.php

The calamity as it unfolded

i.php

Some 400 Series (416, I think, but can't remember now) 3/4" hexagonal bar I had laying around

i.php

Almost there; the bore has been drilled within 3/16" from the "jet" end

i.php

The pilot hole, .07mm was drilled by a hand held drill__you can barely see the bit in the end of the smaller chuck

i.php

The final orifice, .095mm was done by hand with a pin-vise

i.php

Comparison of the drill bit sizes (not shown is the 21/64" used for the 1/8 x 27 NPT thread)

i.php

Since I had to make my own, I made it tall enough to clear the volute housing; now I'm ready to pick up where I left off Friday evening...

i.php

So, what's anybody else been up to?

Randy--

Of course it does not have to be Healey-related and that was a great story to read.

You say this is fitting is for a turbo-oil feed line. Do you feel that electrolysis between dissimilar metals happens in the presence of oil? In any case your customer is a lucky fellow that it happened while the car was at your shop versus on the road, et. At best a mess to clean and at worst a ruined turbo or fire. Things rarely break except when under stress at the worst time.

A Plea --

One of the frustrating things about the current situation is the virus seems to have the unexpected consequence of fixing all the actual Healey problems out in Forum Land.

This is frustrating because with my car in the shop, I'm voyeuristiclly trying to live through other Forumistas' Healey issues. Aren't there any out there?

well my winter project list is winding down now. time to start on yard and house work. but my winter projects went like this....

first it was the shop. i wanted to separate the work side from the car side. mainly to keep the dust down when grinding, painting, or woodworking. but i also wanted to be able to have the shop open in case i wanted to put a car up there or put another one in. i had some old barn door track to use so i went with this system.
the opening is 12' wide and i can open it up, if needed, pushing the curtain back to the outside wall. extra bonus this winter was that i was only heating half the garage when i was out there working. i used two tarps, velcro together. since then i added zippers from Lowes (zipper wall) and they work better.

of course adding the wall made room for garage art. So that was another few days of playing.

Next i changed my gearshift and e-brake handle. the old ones were so bad i had just painted them. while i was at it, i recovered the gearshift base. that was a pain. i still had a few wrinkles to smooth out when the pic was taken.
7E6D2FD3-5B5D-40F3-BBEA-E6C8D98477F7_1_201_a.jpg

Since my birthday fell during this time period i bought some new rear hinges and a handle for the boot. also added the rally bumpers. got to practice a little welding when i made the bracket for the license plate light. (did not want to drill any holes in the car so it mounts on the license plate bracket)
9151B4C6-D156-4A80-8FB9-08C79F7CBA13_1_201_a.jpg

unfortunately this did not fill my winter... so i started looking for something new to play with. i like low cost, lots of labor jobs. they keep me busy and keep the wife happy (less money spent).
i tried to make a cold air box. early tests suggest it is better than the original breathers. it will take some hot weather to get a better feel. the other day it got up to 80 around here and i took a ride. car ran great but it was not a real long ride and not a lot of stopping. still the power felt good at speed and the temp was around 170* while driving. we shall see. but it was a fun project... and cheap.
02BE94DF-228F-4369-86BD-482CBBE51D5A_1_201_a.jpg

Of course i still did the winter cleaning and also went thru the winter check list. while doing this i added Nord-lock washers on all the shock bolts. i also had some dust-nibs in the paint i worked on and some other things i polished.

Now it is on to the house... and yard... and...

I went way outside car repair yesterday. I repaired my trash compactor. The step at the bottom has been broken for a year. I ignored it because I could still get it to work. Finally took the drawer out and welded up a hole that had turned into a slot. Seems to be a poor design but it will not fail again! I welded a thick washer in place.
My excuse for not fixing it was that I did not want to weld in the house. Lazy excuse, I took the drawer outside and welded it up.

Keoke, I still remember you posting that your lost your "cup holder". I was so moved by that. Several in the GGAHC referred to my Lynn as "GPS" because she had a knack for getting people going in the right direction. Months ago I wrote to our club newsletter that my GPS was broke. I did this remembering your post. Thank you.
I am sorry for hijacking this post.

Is it just me and/or my laptop or has something in the sign-in procedure changed?

I used to be able to simply open the forum and I was on the air. Now, every time I click on the room icon I have saved in "favorite places" when the page opens the little blue guy shows up telling me to log on and I must either check the screenname and pw boxes for them to autofill or input the information before I gain entrance to the forum.

I mean, it's not that I don't have a lot of extra time on my hands to do these small tasks but in an unstable world every little bit of the familiar helps.
