TR2/3/3A Question on steering idler unit

On the steering idler unit (under the section: TO FIT IDLER UNIT) the manual says to screw the fulcrum pin into the housing and unscrewing one full turn; ensure also that the grease seal is in good condition. Am I correct to assume that the pin is screwed in with the seal over the pin and thus the pin is screwed down against the seal? On mine when I unscrew the pin one full turn from being down against the seal, I end up with a 1/16 inch gap between the seal and the "top" of the pin. The seal is right at 1/8 inch thick so when I unscrew the pin, the total gap ends up 3/16 inch. Is my seal flattened down and thus not expanding up against the top of the pin...my seal is not new? How thick should the seal be? Thanks!

As I see it, what's important is that the arm moves freely throughout the range of motion required. Originals were threaded (etc) such that the threads would bottom with the arm in the middle of the required range, so a full turn back was required to get full free motion.

But it sounds like that isn't what's happening with your aftermarket arm. If backing off just 1/2 turn gets into the correct region, then do that.

1/8" sounds about right for that seal. It's not much of a seal, IMO the joint relies mostly on the buildup of excess grease, from adding 3 or 4 strokes every 1000 miles, to keep dirt from getting in.
