My blower is cracked and I would just prefer to buy a used one, restore it, and change it over for the cracked one. Question is, can I take it out without removing the fender?

For easier installation, suggest using u-nuts on the feet; bolts upward thru wheelwell. IMO this makes the install much easier.

Hi Wangdango,

Yes, you can remove the heater blower without taking off the fender and I have found the most difficult part to be reinstallng the ducts once the blower is installed. I performed this effort early in the 1970s when I depended on my Healey as our family car and felt the defogger/defroster blower was just to weak to have any effect. Back then, you could roam salvage yards looking for parts and I found a wrecked Olds Starfire Conv. and pulled its blower motor and squeral cage. Since my blower housing was also cracked quite badly after being dropped, I epoxied it back together and installed the motor after mounting my original squeral cage onto its shaft. When activated, the blower produced an air flow with much more force and could now be used to heat the cabin AND deliver sufficient air to defrost the windshield simultaneously.

If you are going to go through the trouble of addressing your heater blower, I would suggest adding power to improve its performance.

Just my thoughts,
Ray(64BJ8P1)

I added a Moss replacement motor/squirrel cage unit in March 2016. Was able to maximize the force by incorporating a relay. The stock wire from the switch energizes the relay, rather than powering the blower, which is done by a heavy fused wire from the solenoid.

I found it helpful to form the ducting with the blower on the bench. Pre-form the tight bend on the exhaust duct on the bench while attached to the blower.

Withdrawal notes:
--remove distributor
--loosen duct clamps & disconnect wiring; remove horns if any
--remove fender-to-feet bolts
--undo rear duct from heater and blower, pull out through firewall into engine compartment
--undo front duct fender retainer band, disconnect duct off blower input
--rotate blower and remove to bench
--move front duct into fender below windshield; withdraw through distributor area

Installation notes - new Moss duct hoses:
--I found the front hose to be too long and trimmed it by 2". YMMV.
Install order:
1) front duct into radiator wall and fender brace
2) rear duct pre-formed per above. Push through firewall from engine compartment
3) position blower (not bolted in position); attach ducts to blower. IIRC the rear duct first, rotating the blower a bit.
4) bolt blower feet to wheelwell with u-nuts per above; connect rear duct to heater under dash
5) install distributor & other stuff as removed
