Hey anyone have any tips on installing an oil catch can on the breather tube for a TR 3a? ChefJim

I put one on my TR3. I restricted the intake off the manifold to about 1/4 inch. Otherwise it was pulling too much air from the valve cover and that included lots of oil. This installation did eliminate the smoke coming out the exhaust when starting in first gear.

I do not have any actual experience with modifying the breather pipe; I let the breather pipe do what it does. A while back someone mentioned something about the breather pipe and its function. I was surprised that the breather pipe was so highly engineered and shorting the pipe or modifying the pipe could be a problem with air flow and engine breathing. When I was in high school, most the cars had a breather pipe and the cars were called ---open crank case ventilation cars.

I see what you mean about trying to catch the drip the pipe makes. I bought a non- running tr3 years and the pipe was cut short. I do not know the effects of that, but I would think if someone tried to catch the drip and the system plugged the outcome would not be good.

There is a recent discussion thread on this topic on the TR Register TR4 forum: https://www.tr-register.co.uk/forums...-like-a-sieve/

Some TR4 owners prefer the old draft tube, others the TR4A PCV setup. Either way you need a vacuum source to pull the fumes from the crank case and provision to let air into the engine. On the stock TR3 the draft tube pulls the vacuum from the venturi effect under the car while moving down the road. Make-up air in drawn into the engine through the wire gauze inside the oil filler cap. Later TRs use manifold vacuum.

Racetorations in the UK has a setup for racing TR3s as I believe you must have a catch can for track use: http://www.racetorations.co.uk/trium...ather-kit-p143

Thanks for the insight. Think I'll live with my car making"deposits" for awhile more while I research. ChefJim
