TR6 Proper ring gaps

Hi, I recently purchased Hasting ring set (standard) from Moss. When I went to check the gap in the cylinder they were at .022. I thought you would have to file them to manual spec gap.I installed them, I read that the gap is better off big than too tight. My question will there be issues because of this. I also installed new connecting rod bearings.

Too big is better than too small; but correct is better than wrong. Specified end gap is .010" to .015"; at .022" you would be starting with rings that are, in effect, already worn. Probably not too serious at first, just a little loss of power, higher fuel consumption, and maybe a bit of oil consumption. Should run fine other than that.

Thanks TR3 driver. I can live with less power. I just want to do some cruising before it gets too cold. Haven't drove it all summer.

Have you measured the actual cylinder bore ?
The reason I ask is 25k miles ago I went back with new County brand pistons STD size into cylinders honed with a 3 inch Flex Hone and the standard size Hastings ring gap wasn't much over 1/100"

Hi poolboy, yes I measured the bores there is about +.005 taper from standard bore dia. I'm thinking that would be the reason for the larger gap. I did hone the cylinder out to get the cross hatch marks.
