Popping into Neutral on Inclines

In the past two weeks I've had my transmission pop out of gear into neutral while heading down steep inclines. Twice I was in first and just this morning I was in second. Does anyone have an idea what's happening and if I should be concerned?

Usually, they pop out of fourth; my BJ8 started doing this a couple years ago. I posted here--should be a thread if you search--and on the email list. Got lots of suggestions about the causes and fix, but bottom line is wear and/or too much end float on the main shaft in the gearbox (for popping out of fourth). One possible fix is a thicker spacer between the bell housing and the gearbox; DWM sells them but it will likely require some machining of the gearbox to fit. In your case, it's most likely the 1st/2nd gear sliding hub's spring-loaded detent balls not seating adequately in their holes, which would require hub replacement (DWM has them, and the pound-dollar is down).

A possible 'quick fix:' If you have the gearbox transmission rubber boot installed 'nipple down,' this can put a bit more side load on the shift lever. Install the the boot 'nipple up' and see if that helps.
