    Marx Viton rear engine seal

The engine in my TR3A is currently out of the car, albeit with the gearbox attached, while the body is at the paint shop. The rear seal is still original, so it weeps.

Has anyone replaced their rear seal with the Marx Viton seal? Can it be done without a major engine disassembly? That is, truly bolt on (after removing the flywheel, of course) Or, wait until the next time I have the engine out? Thanks- Jim

I am almost certain you have to have the crank out to get the top half of the seal housing installed. There is a tool to set the position of the seal housing.

Yes the engine needs to come apart! Follow the instructions and use the alignment tool.

It's been done with the engine in the car with tranny out, https://www.triumphexp.com/forum/tr2...nkseal.734359/ , but there is no mention of aligning the aluminum segments and as David said above, I see no way of doing that without taking the crank right out. That's not too bad a job and it will give you the opportunity to check the bearings and to see what went wrong with the old seal or scroll. You could leave the top end all intact.
