TR4/4A Upper steering flex coupler

After reviewing posts in prep for replacing my cracked upper steering flex coupling and broken ground strap (pic),while I had the master cylinder support bracket out, I couldn't reconcile how it currently looks. Was hoping someone could provide a picture of the coupling area as a reference. Just trying to make sure the PO didn't "adjust" the steering wheel position which might explain the wear marks on upper outer column (pic). Any help to lessen my uneasiness would be greatly appreciated.

FYI - there was a discussion on the Triumph Registry forum regarding the flex-joint clamps. Apparently the stock design allows for little if any clamping pressure on the steering shaft no matter how much the bolts are tightened. The solution is to add a slot to the clamp, just below where the bolts go through. This allows enough deflection when the bolts are tightened, to grip the steering shaft tightly.

I’ve attached pictures of slots added with a hacksaw, and machined.

Thanks for the info. I'll evaluate that option when replacing the coupling. For now I want to focus on moving the steering wheel closer to the dash, so my 5"2" wife, who also loves to drive, can fully depress the clutch without sitting so close to the steering wheel it's awkward. Maybe I'll split the difference to start.
