White lithium grease works well. Anything's better than what was used back in the day and has solidified by now!

I had the motor off mine while working on the brake cylinders so I cleaned and greased it. It was a solid lump with impressions where the moving parts went but it worked well before and after the new grease went in. I did not remove, clean or grease the cable but the old solidified grease didn't seem to matter.
Grease is like wine in that there are lots of brands and types available but they will all get you buzzed; and don't use too much of it.

I've always felt that grease, either white lithium or chasis grease is the best lubricant. That said, any grease will harden and become useless in a few years. So, I use grease for parts I plan to use and maintain well. If I plan to let it sit and appreciate with minimum maintenance...I use the spray graphite Tom mentioned. The graphite has no shelf life...but don't use it on aluminum parts.
