GT6 Float Height, 150CD [Early CD, Not Later CDSE or CD2SE]

Though I cannot locate them I know there have been threads about setting the float height on the 150 series Strombergs. I'm looking for some clarification regarding the early CD (not CDS, CDSE, or CD2SE carbs).

The factory manual says to set the early 150CD float height so the big end of the float (near the pivot) is 18mm from the carb body when the carb is inverted. The factory manual does not specify a height for the outboard ends of the floats. Can anyone who has worked on the early carbs confirm the 18mm value and have you ever seen a value for the outboard end of the float height as is presented for later carbs?

Thanks,
Doug

Doug, just did mine and the manual said 5/8 at the high point. Have not run them yet so can't confirm they will run properly. 18MM seems a little low in the bowl for cornering.
I worked all afternoon getting both carbs to work and retract as they should. The plastic connectors mean you have to take one carb off to play with the linkage. Had to make a bushing for spring part of the return and that has helped. Used a multi wire choke cable and thinking it's not the way to go, more positive pushing it off.
Takes so much time to check it and make adjustments and trying different brackets, but I'll get there.

Hi Wayne. I was hoping you would reply.

I am pretty sure the 5/8" figure is for the later 150CDS, CDSE, and CD2SE carbs. I called my friend Jamie who has a bunch of factory manuals including one for Strombergs. He found the TR-2000 and early GT6 listed as having a 17mm float height. That will probably be the target I aim for as it is between your 5/8" (16mm) and my factory manual's 18mm.

Like your car, our GT6 has the nylon u-joints on the linkages. They can be difficult to work with. Part of the problem is you have to pry the linkage clamps open a bit to get them to rotate to where you need them.

We're still using the solid core original choke cable. Sometimes I wish that cable were just a tiny bit longer but it has always worked for us. Does the stranded cable stay where you need it to be or does it drift back in while idling?

Doug, the one I'm using now has the twist to hold. I was using the "T" one off a old cable but the hole and slot were worn and it keep popping off, so will have to get a new one.
I checked my book this morning and the 17MM was in a old book, now it did say with out the gasket, so we are talking really close o the same setting.
I'm taking my rear one off today and work on the bushing, pretty sure it's too tight and not letting the secondary bracket to keep up with the one that has the cable attached. Something is too tight because they should be easy.
I did a write up on the other Forum in the what did you do today, couple of pictures and the set up, still need to tear it all down and paint the new accelerator brackets.
Let me know how it goes.

Did your twist-to-lock choke cables come from a Triumph or something else? They were common on MGs of the period. I like them... when they work!

Good luck with the bushing. I hope you get the action to be smooth and easy without too much work. At least the weather should be good this week.

Doug, when they work is the key on those choke cables. LOL Mine does work at the moment and getting my choke to work smooth will determine it I can stay with this one. I have a couple of double cables but just need the one with these carbs but can make a double work.
Been looking after the madam this afternoon, so after cutting some grass in this nice cool weather, will spent some time in the garage. ciphering.

Apart from reassembling the carbs for my car I didn't do anything automotive today. I took advantage of the cool weather to do yard work I had been putting off.

I meant to say that I am sorry I forgot to contact you. I passed relatively near Salisbury last week. My wife and I took a trip to the Transportation Museum in Spencer and then headed west to Statesville to do some shopping. Apart from the horrible weather on Monday it has been great week around here for outdoor activities.

Doug, you missed my house by 6 short blocks. We moved here (Spencer) 5 years ago. I hope you enjoyed the Museum, it's come a long way since I worked in that yard. The big building had no windows when Southern donated it to the State. We listen to the steam engine all the time.
Anyway back to carbs, like you, did lots of yard work and replanted some flowering scrubs the deer pulled up, they are a pain. Like you no major work on the car.
No honey do's planned for tomorrow, I'll file a report.
