Is rust in a fuel filler neck a bad thing? I assumed it was. My 3000's restoration was finished about 2 years ago. I noticed my fuel filler neck had rust in it. I ordered a new one and it had rust as well. I ordered a 2nd one from a different company, but turns out it was from the same manufacturer and batch and the first one. ( and probably the one that's in my car now.) I have two fuel filters on my car, and just replaced them, so I think I'm ok. I have plans to cut open the filters and check them.

Well it certainly appears to have quite a bit of surface rust accumulated on the inside filler tube. i could understand your concern. Whether this translate to similar surface corrosion in the tank is unknown but checking the filter and a visual check of the tank are good starts. Filler neck original to my BJ-7 shows minimum signs of surface rust, but the tank has a little more, but not worrisome. Some accumulation is observed when the fuel pump pre-filters are exchanged every year. The dryer Southern California climate also helps minimize corrosion. GONZO

If you got that from Moss, you could call them and ask for one without rust. I've found them responsive to similar QC issues.

Mine is, I assume, 62 years old and no rust. If I don't assume, it's at least 20 years old. It seems to have had a black coating on the interior, which has mostly chipped off.

Hi Chuck,

Your observation of rust in the neck, even before it being used, was something I hadn't thought of or experienced in my original pipe. I would follow Steve's suggestion and call the vendor and return the pipe. It has been 25-years since I had to have my TR7's tank repaired and coated and 40-years since I replaced my original Healey tank (rusted through when in storage) and I can't remember if my replacement tank was galvanized.
Can someone tell me why these pipes, or gas tanks, are not protectively coated or galvanized?​
