1958 Metropolitan Progress

Just an update. Got a nice trunk assy from Ron Bauman, looks, works great . Worked out engine stumbling issues (mostly carb throttle shaft wear), brake bleeding issues. Now stopped by distributor issues, but will work it out. The car runs the best it has (...before today's issue) and I can finally start to think about cosmetics.

Decided to do a slight custom: will make bumpers from f/g and carbon fiber, molding them smoothly into the fenders. They will still be removable (using a tight seal like VW or MGA fender edging) for the inevitable dings they'll get. All bumper bolts and over riders will be deleted. I can finally say this will be a truly fun project!

Congratulations on your progress.

What did you do with the carbs and the throttle shaft wear?

If the distributor issues are due to wear you may wish to consider having Jeff at Advanced Distributors rebuild it for you. I have been pleased with his work.

Hi Doug, my progress report was posted because you asked for updates! To your questions:
1)This car has a Zenith carb. I'll try to attach pix of how I chamferred the already existing brass bush to ready it for an o-ring. I just use a countersink bit. The bush was probably installed decades ago, as IT was worn. I've fixed several of my SUs by putting one (or two) o-rings on the throttle shaft with some nice durable axle grease to protect the o-ring from decay.
I've used Jeff and also like his work but the diz is fine, just have to figure out my latest FTL (failure to launch)

Nice fix on the carb. I assume that a flat linkage plate holds the o-ring down in the countersink and squishes it slightly against the shaft.

Yes, exactly. You'll always need something to push against the new O-ring.That's the same as with SUs too.
