Well, probably my own fault for neglect, but I just snagged a ‘12 R57 Cabrio and figured the first place I’d come to for tech advice, is BCF.
did there used to be a Mini sub-forum for us heretics or am I imagining that?
Cheers all

Interesting, I typed all capital letters.

Had it happen to me as well, chalked it up to a quirk of vBulletin warez.

Wow, How could I enjoy the driving with all those numbers and letters spinning in my head? I much rather enjoy spinning tires, and gears and rpms.

Fully agreed, but do you drive a AH "100" or "7000", a "C5" or "C6" Corvette, a Triumph "TR4" or "4A"... Them numbers confuse the heck out of all of us, but speed up technical discussion! However, BMW owners are a especially unique (geeky:smile:) breed, in that they refer to their cars by production codes vs. model names.

I respect your argument but don't really agree that that some of us "others" are the same as comparing apples to apples. I drive an Austin Healey but don't refer to it by anything other than it's just my Austin Healey. If I wanted to be arrogant and missive to some non-car oriented person while having a conversation with them I would just say " I HAVE A BJ7". That would really impress them and make me feel special. Not! Then also when driving my MGB I could say it's a vintage race car with dual carburetors, but I usually say it's just an MG. ONE OF THE EARLIEST CONTINUOUSLY PRODUCTED BRITISH SPORTS CARS IN THE WORLD WITH 50 YEARS OF CONTINUOUS PRODUCTION ON ABINGDON ON THAMES, you simple minded blok. Or when driving one of my Vettes I could just say it's an early LT1, 383/467, TH-400. But what I usually say is it's just my old Vette. Or I could say when driving my other Vette is that it is an '03, C5, base 350/350, LS1, 6 spd. But what I usually say is it's just a Vette I use for road trips.
Anyway I don't what to specifically deride anyone by name but your last sentence pretty well says it.

BMW, VW, is there difference anymore?

Both companies have skeletons in their closets, both have expensive to maintain cars. They are becoming very similar aren't they?!

Begin Historical Rant:
BMW: There is a 1960s conspiracy theory involving BMW. The claim is that in the early 1960s a BMW board member was on a committee reviewing the solvency of the Borgward car company. The BMW official recommended Borgward be dissolved. When the assets of Borgward were sold enough capital was raised to pay the creditors in full which indicated that Borgward was not insolvent. This compares to BMW who was insolvent a year earlier and was saved by infusions of capital. In short, the conspiracy theory is that BMW accepted money to save their company and lied to have a competitor dissolved. It is ancient history but still something to keep in mind.

VW: How quickly we seem to have forgotten that VW is the company that lied to the world about the emissions of their diesel products. Whether you are green or not, this was a massive lie with blame going very high up the corporate ladder. It is a lie that flew in the face of VW's historical position as the cheap and eco friendly car make.

I have owned both BMWs and VWs. Both are expensive to service. Both have lost my confidence and I won't own either again. As for the new MINI, that's a BMW product so I won't own one of those either.

End Rant.

Semantics:
As for the new sub-forum here for the new MINI, please note that BMW themselves chose to use all capital letters for the new car. The classic Mini continues to be designated with a capital "M" with the remaining characters in lower case. It's a trivial point but it helps keep the discussions on track.

Doug, What did you expect out of a company founded by the Nazi party?

I've owned a BMW, a 1975 2002 series, it was actually a very nice little car, well engineered, easy to work on, and fun to drive; it was one of the few I shouldn't have let go of.

Volkswagen was founded by the German Labor Front which was a National Socialist organization that replaced the pre-Nazi labor unions in Germany.

Thanks Walt. I'd thought most of this thread was about BMW, which existed long before there was a Nazi party.

Sorry I wasn't clear Tom. I should have specified that I was replying to Doug's comment about VW lying about its emissions.
