Seems "ballpark" to me -- for a Vanguard (85mm; 2088cc), a bit small for a TR4 (86mm bore; 2138cc) but certainly too large for a TR2/3 (83mm; 1991cc). Are there any markings on the top of the piston?

Could it be an early AE replacement piston? That's what came out of my TR4A engine, and yours looks similar. They have that extra oil ring near the bottom of the piston. It does seem a little small, though, for a TR4, assuming your caliper is zeroed correctly.

Andrew Mace: The only writing on the tops of the pistons are a cylinder number. Sarastro: My caliper is calibrated.

Those are what I got from Moss...not the size, but the unmarked 4 ring style...about 5 years ago. The 4 ring was not stock, so I went to TRF looking for a "more correct" 3 ring piston. They were also unmarked! Anyway, after weighing the complete sets, it turned out the 4 ring set was MUCH lighter than the 3 ring set. I went with the 4 ring set on my build.

Is it a TR2 engine block? What's the number? "Back in the day," the 85mm Vanguard engine (and some Ferguson tractors with the Standard engine) pistons and liners were sometimes used to upgrade these engines before Triumph came out with the 86mm set as an option (later "standard" on the later 3B and 4).
"Hepolite" pistons? Years ago (1974) I was rebuilding a TR4A and the replacement 86mm pistons I bought from the dealer, came with the 4th lower ring. They were labeled "Hepolite Performance Pistons". The parts guy said they were used for competition applications. But that's just a Parts Guy at a dealership, so take it for what its worth.
