TR2/3/3A exhaust

My neighbors say that I need a new muffler. ;-)
I've seen a few different systems including the stainless steel one a Moss Motors and the Monza performance exhaust.

Any other good suppliers or tips on purchasing the exhaust?

TRF has the Monza, and OEM kit as well. Holiday sale and all.

I was looking at the OEM kit, and it does come with all the hangers and clamps.

I am a fan of The Roadster Factory since they have great customer service. They are fairly quick to respond to emails, and follow-up on purchases. Moss came across as a little impersonal, and seem to only want to deal with big restores, not just one at a time parts sales. Just my .02

Steve,
You may want to try a baffle instead of a whole new muffler. I have a 56 TR3 that had one straight thru muffler with a pipe to the rear of the car. It was so loud that even I didn't like it. I found and added a Monza two-tip end (extender) that just split and added two chrome tips. That didn't really quieten it down. On a lark, I added a motorcycle baffle and that did the trick. Look at Dennis Kirk - https://www.denniskirk.com/harley-davidson/baffles
I bought the DS-202019
Good Luck!

You might not have a stock resonator with your muffler; it makes a big difference. I always purchase a muffler and resonator in mild steel in case it does need welding in the future, but I think only VB sells the mild steel -plus I try to stay stock or original, but I guess the simpler tr4 center clamp works fine, never tryed it. The mild steel has been on my driver for over 20 years

I just bought a Harley baffle. For $8 how can you go wrong.
I do not have a resonator and may add that later.

I bought a Falcon stainless system from TRF in 1987. Had a 'lifetime guarantee' - I always wonder what that term really means.

A couple of years ago the seam on the muffler split & Falcon/TRF sent me a replacement right away - that's what 'lifetime guarantee' should mean.

Falcon SS on my 58. Last year I toyed with it, removing the rear muffler and adding an Ansa twin pipe resonator. Trip around the block and I put the Falcon rear back on - removing the rear was just too loud for me.

Very happy with Falcon quality, fit and finish, and ease of install (I have a 4-post lift which helped a lot!)

Thanks all
I think this is a good project tp put off for another day.

Meanwhile my headlights are intermittent and my windshield wipers are not.

FWIW, I just drove into the local independent muffler shop, and told him the old system was too loud for my tastes. He sold me two "Cherry Bomb" glasspacks in series, very similar to the factory system except round instead of oval. Cost was very minimal, and included installation. With an appointment, it only took him about 30 minutes to install. I'm very happy with the result, still sounds like an old sports car but no longer sets off car alarms in parking garages and so on.

After finding how easy (and basically free) having him install my exhaust systems is; I'll never do my own again.

Also FWIW, with the previous single glasspack, I discovered that a downturned tip makes it seem less loud. Apparently bouncing the sound waves off the pavement helps spread them out more, or something like that. Anyway, it was a quick, cheap fix and I ran that way for many years.

The stock system (as well as the ones I bought) uses fiberglass filling to absorb and muffle the sound waves. Over time, the filling breaks down and finds it's way through the perforations and out the tailpipe (aka "burns out") and you can wind up with a hollow chamber that does nothing to muffle the sound (and might even make it louder). This photo is from a Stag, but the stock TR3 unit is exactly the same construction.

What is the difference between a resonator and a muffler? Is the resonator hollow? The early TR2 only had the one short 18 inch "muffler", and then later cars were fitted with two longer ones. Was one a resonator?

Mufflers muffle by having baffles, chambers and or fiberglass to absorb sound, making the car quieter. Resonators bounce the sound around to eliminate certain frequencies and let other frequencies through, making the car sound better, not quieter.

I had a neighbor that complained of my exhaust. Now, I never had loud pipes and was a litle perplexed about his complaint. So, I took the mufflers off my Mustang and showed him the FOMOCO stamps on the mufflers, he thought they were noisy but agreed they were stock and legal. So, Saturday at 7:00am., I fired the Stang up without the mufflers and rattled every window in his house. He came running over stunned I would do such a thing. I kindly told him I had never heard the exhaust without mufflers. He never complained again.

Yes, the second one. It was meant to cut the sharp note of the small muffler. My TR2 has only one longer (24”) muffler. It’s louder than the TR3 set-up, but not unpleasantly loud.

All this muffler talk reminds me of a ‘66 Big Block Vette I had with side pipes...and NO mufflers. That was actually factory! Anyway, I took it for the annual inspection, and after listening to it idle in the shop for 20 straight minutes I excused myself to go see what was going on. The (female) tech was on her hands and knees looking under the car with her face practically against the side pipe. I tapped her shoulder and asked what she was looking for. She popped up...sunburned from the pipe heat and yelled over the deafening exhaust that, “I can’t find the mufflers”. She refused to believe me when I said it had none and that was factory. Well...she was about to bust the inspection when, fortuneatly, another car-buff tech came over and saved the day by agreeing that no mufflers on a mid-year Vette was, in fact, factory AND legal.

She had a sunburned face to accentuate the lesson!

That was the same car I took my Yorkie for an 8,000 mile road trip, and she would never get near the car again. I could set off every alarm in the entire parking lot if I reved the motor. But my neighbors loved it!

I removed a Monza system from my car as it was too noisy for me, various speeds resulted in loud reverberations, blaaaaaats or harmonics and just plain noise. Now all I have to do is replace the "temporary" straight pipe with some other muffler.

I have the same system on my Mk I. It is really nice, but its a tiny bit loud as both muffler are straight through.

I've posted this before but many years ago, I removed the stock TR3 muffler and replaced it with a Smithy's straight-thru. Sounded much better with no harsh blatty overtones.

I’ve got the Monza/Pacesetter on my 60 that’s also got a header on it. I don’t find it too loud and I enjoy the exhaust note.
For my 59, I’ve got a beautiful old Stebro exhaust for it that I’m looking forward to installing.

Cheers
Tush
