I worked in a large fabrication shop. When the welders worked in confined areas they wore hoods that had fresh air piped in. Since I ran the machine shop I don't know any details of the system,

Thanks..I think I am thinking of a portable unit..smallish..I don't have a great deal of room in my shop/garage. Several manufacturers make models that would suit me. Dayton makes one..single speed fan..would it suck shielding gas away from the puddle?..I don't know.

I would think that a fan or vacuum unit that created any type of breeze would affect the shielding gas. Piped in air to a helmet would solve the problem without messing with the shielding gas.

You may want to post that question on a welding forum.

I would think that if you situated the Dayton nozzle a feet or two from your work but close enough to get the fumes you should be OK.\

I used a box fan to create a draft when I did a lot of welding. I was in the garage so it was not a problem getting fumes in the house.

Thanks for the idea. Ideal probably for a stationary platform, but getting into tight spaces..footwell of my tr3 for instance, I think would be tough...and taking off the hood, I would be back in the fumes and they are really starting to bother me. Good idea though. Looking at an Ace unit now..2 speeds. Pricey but I only have one set of lungs left
