Hi guys
my name is Mike Treloar from New Zealand.
I recently purchased a very original 1963 s1 e type ots that I have started to refurbish (not restore).
It requires a complete interior and a bare metal repaint. Apart from this it is a great runner that has not had any restoration work done on it apart from general maintenance.
The front panel of the radio console and the gear shift aluminium surround are leather covered and this is as per "The Definitive History" page 668. These changes made Sept1963 as this change was introduced my car must have been one of the first off the blocks with these changes in addition of foam backed vinyl on the centre console. The leather on the radio console is grained similar to the grained vinyl but the aluminium gear surround has a smooth leather surface -as best I can see. It seems real strange, almost as if Jaguar picked out leather they had spare to do this with.
To my question, has anybody else experienced this during their restore.
I have purchased leather with the correct surface to redo both areas but I am of a mind to do it all in vinyl which may look better, I
dont know at this stage.
