It would appear that the aluminum door trim pieces were originally installed with self-tapping screws...true? I'm inclined to install them with pop rivets because I think the heads would sit more flush to the metal than pan-head screws. Would this be considered kosher or not?

the purists cant answer ......they are all having heart palpitations at the thought of you using pop rivets ........oh The sacrilege !!!!! :eagerness:

My opinion is its your car , do what you think is right or pleases you . I did mine with stainless panheads as I did with all visible fastners . I dont like to see corroded dull fastners .

These were billed as the correct fasteners, and they are relatively low profile Posidrive screws, not your common variety hardware store type.

I've slept since buying these__some fifteen (15) years ago, but would've been sourced through either VB or Moss.

Well, I did use screws so the purists can sleep well tonight. ;-) My BJ7 is not 100% pure, but I will strive to do as much true to the original as I can.
