TR2/3/3A different hub collars

Hey guys

After another day of rummaging through this pile of parts that apparently forms a TR2, i come across another curve ball that i am hoping someone can answer for me. i have unearthed a total of 4 rear hubs of two slightly different designs. Most obvious of which is the taper on the collar...which as my luck goes i have one of each. Both collars fit the axle spline ok but i cant use one of each type of hub as their offset is different by approx 6mm. Im not even sure ive got a question this time.....just frustration from lack of information and consistency on this **** car.

All of the collars on my 2 TR2 diffs were the version on the right. That said, I think either...or both on the same diff...should work. Their purpose is to center the hub on the outside, not to position the hub inward or outward. The result is that the nut on one side will be 6mm farther out on the threads than the other side, but the 2 hubs will be located the same, if that makes sense. The hub is located by the inside collar machined into the axle.

Here is a picture of the ones I used, and the worn out one on the right. As John, says, these are like the ones on the right.

Thanks for the info guys

the 6mm I refer to is actually a difference of the hub face to the bearing collar but this could be because the hubs haven't been cleaned up yet. I shall do some more investigation

I've also just noticed the hub area were these collars face to are different relative to the taper of the collar... I wonder what car the shallower hubs are actually off?

My early TR3 TS11083 has the style on the left. Does anyone know the correct torque on the axel nuts? I replaced my oil seals but I'm still getting leakage thru the spline. Thanks

There were 4 tech orders over the years concerning the Lockheed axle leaking from the splines. The final attempt, before scrapping the entire design for the later tapered axles, was to smear sealant over the axle threads and collar.

Thanks for that info John, ill certainly be using sealant when i re assemble it all. Its funny i finished cleaning up the four hubs i have and thought i had a pair of each, turns out i have two shallow taper hubs and two of the steeper type...but three of them take a 1.5" seal and one takes the larger 1.62". Talk about a pile of random parts!

rcdore i believe the correct torque is similar to the pinion nut so 85 to 100 ft/lbs.
