Just got some sad news.

My wife just got an email telling her that the 20-something son of a lady who took the NAMI Family-to-Family class a couple years ago has committed suicide. Her son had a serious brain disorder and she took the class so she could better understand her son's illness and help him more effectively. I hate getting news like this.

Her son didn't happen to live in New York? A classmate of mine from high school just lost her 20-something son. We've had no details other than "his death was unexpected". Sad news all around.

I'm sorry to hear. It sounds like there's a lot of sadness out there right now.

Over the past 12 years of teaching Family to Family, I've had a handful of families lose a loved one like this. Thankfully these are the exceptions and not the rule, but it's never easy.

I had a good friend commit suicide some years ago. I found out afterwards he had struggled with mental health issues for years. I never knew. I still don't really understand what happened. He always seemed happy and content with his life.

It is hard to understand, and even harder when you are the person who wants to end it all. Please don't give up on us, we just want acceptance.

It's what NAMI is all about - not giving up on people. By the way, if you are, or know of anyone in Ontario, interested in getting involved with NAMI, they do have a presence up there. They can always use volunteers! https://www.f2fontario.ca/index.html
