MGC Lever Shocks are Toast

So I was cleaning up the rear end of the C project and took off one of the lever shocks to scrape off the road dirt and salt buildup and low and behold when I went to test the shock to see if it was in good shape the lever arm moved very easily with no resistance at all, and a slight clicking sound during movement. I opened up the valve screw to check inside for oil and say that what little oil was in the shock was grayish black and unfortunately I saw metal shavings in the oil as well. Is the shock toast or can it be rebuilt? I can't seem to find a rebuild kit online so my guess is that there isn't one.

Since this isn't going to be a Concours car, just a pleasure vehicle I think I might convert to regular shocks. Does anyone have experience with the conversion? I can't see on any suppliers site a set of conversion shocks specifically for a C, but a B conversion set is available. Will the B set work on a C?

Thanks guys.

Kev, I don't think I would try to rebuild them. I tried once long ago with my C and was none too successful. I think you should try Apple hydraulics for a quote, or at least see if they have a rebuild kit.
There was a conversion kit from Koni, I will try to get the info for you. Spax also had a kit avail, but I think the Koni's were adjustable.

Conversion to a standard type shock will cost much more than having the original shocks rebuilt. The Armstrong shock is an excellent shock and replacing them with another type does not always give the desired results over an Armstrong. The Moss front shock replacements are not exactly as original, but I assume they work as well. I've had Peter rebuild shocks for me and would never use anyone else. JMHO. PJ
