TR2/3/3A Checking oil in rear axle

In what position should the car be when you check the oil in the rear axle? Level or can you jack up the rear in order to more easily get to the fill plug? If jacked up, should you fill to overflowing then lower the car as you could do when filling the gearbox? Any help will be appreciated.

Ideally it would be on all fours on the floor or lift - but I doubt it is really critical. If you have to jack the rear you could probably just leave it a smidge less than totally full - maybe and eighth inch below the lip of the opening.

If you want to be exact then yeah, fill it and then lower for a spell to let the excess runn out, then up again to thread in the plug.

I'm with Geo, don't believe a slight overfill (like you'd get checking the level with the rear jacked up) will hurt anything at all. Too much might increase it's tendency to mark it's spot, but even that isn't necessarily a Bad Thing.
