So I'm checking to pick up some new spark plugs for my ride and looking to see if they are 1/2" reach (as per the engine ID on the chassis plate). Turns out PO has 3/4" reach. I measure the hole and sure enough it's 3/4 inch reach. More investigation shows the TD2 engine had been swapped out with a TD engine (early number of 5232). The early TD engine should have come with a head that required a 1/2" reach. Head casting number is 168422. I'm not sure what happened here. In my travels to get to this point I read that certain year TD heads were not interchangeable with earlier blocks because the water passage holes were not aligning. The engine is not overheating (no loss of coolant anywhere)but does run a bit warm. Any ideas on this would be a great relief. What started out as a simple task feels like it just got a little more complicated.
