up-date - upholstery glue

A while back I posted a reply about the glue that I used in redoing the upholstery on one of the Healeys. I suggested 3M Super 77, because it seemed to work well.

I stand corrected.

At the time, one of the BCF regulars, "healeyblue", mentioned that it would not hold up in the heat, and humidity. He was right.

My seat covers have come away from the seat foam, and now I'm faced with re-glueing the covers again. I was speaking with a local fellow who re-covers upholstery for a living (seats, headliners, etc). He advised me that none of the rattle can glues are up to the task. They hold for a while, but ultimately will fail. He uses a product that comes in a gallon jug, and is quite expensive, and sprays it on with a dedicated gun. Not sure of the product, but I'll follow up on this one, since he's offered to let me use his equipment. He also did not recommend contact cement for seats.

In fairness, the 3M glue did work well on hard backed items like kick plates, and door panels.

So, live and learn, I guess. Just thought I'd pass this along.

Landau Top and Trim adhesive. About $50 a gallon. Its sold as spray grade but I've brushed it with success. My top guy told me the same thing. Nothing in an aerosol can compares.

Agree with the brush on in lieu of spray gun, did it on boat headliner, fumes were fun but it has lasted 10 years. No heat in winter and temps 10 or less. Bought in smaller cans quart.

The key is the glue has to be made for vinyl. Otherwise the chemicals in the glue will slowly release from the vinyl backing.

The glue I most likely recommended back then would have been "weldwood contact cement". Available here in the states at lowes or homedepot. It's all I use for uphostery and carpets. I only use the 3m spray glue for light applications like the vinyl on the dash board .

One more thing that I have experienced: Clean off all of the old glue before re-gluing. I used a solvent, but can't remember exactly what I used:blue:. I did carefully test it on an inconspicuous spot before using it. I had attempted to fix the item a couple of times, and the repair never held. A friend told me to clean it, I did, and it is still holding after several years. Good luck! Jim

I swear by "3M Adhesive Remover," in the red and white can. You can't get it in California--but I stocked-up by 'mail order'--so you know it's good stuff. Never seen it hurt paint.

Thumbs up on the Landau top & trim adhesive that I buy from my auto upholstery friend in town for $10 a quart. They spray it on but I brush it on both pieces and blow it with a hair dryer to flash the solvent before assembly.

Not quite there yet, but will be installing interior parts soon. Where would one use this type of adhesive? Between the seat covering and the foam? I did not realize that glue was used there?

A few people mentioned contact cement. That is my usual go-to adhesive. Wondering whether the latex type contact adhesive would work throughout the car where adhesive is needed, or should one stick to the regular contact cement?

Re: up-date - upholstery glue

Hi All,
I have been looking for a good glue for vinyl and/or leather for the past 30 years and when I think I have found one, something always seems to change and the glue is again defeated by heat and sun. As I have found, the underlying problem is an adverse chemical reaction resulting when the plasticizers, used to make vinyl flexible, migrates to the surface as a result of time heat and/or sunlight, and attacks the glue.

There were times I had found glues that seemed to work for specific materials. However, since formulations change (glues and vinyl/leather chemicals) and we are looking for glues with holding ability over the long term, it is difficult to draw conclusions on immediate satisfactions.

I agree that cleaning old glue/contaminants is an obvious must, but even new vinyl should be address as well. To improve the potential for compatibility, I would suggest using an adhesive-remover made by the same manufacturer as the chosen glue.

Landau Top and Trim cement seem to be focused on conditions specific to the issues of heat, sun, and vinyl plasticizer chemical attack, so I see this cement as having a high success potential.

It's what my upholsterer uses. He sold me quart jars of it for $10. He's been in the biz for 70+ years.

Moss used to sell this stuff which stuck like ... er ... glue:

They no longer stock it, could be a California thing or maybe it was a pain to ship.
