Some of you may remember several years ago, when John Macartney drove a restored TR Stag across country as a fund raiser for PTSD studies. John stayed with Janet and me in Clarksville as he made his way, and we developed a friendship. We promised him we'd return the favor and visit him in Evesham, England one day. We did that several weeks ago and had a great time as he showed us around the Cotswolds.

Anyway, he wrote a book about his adventure, Turn Left at the Pacific! (great title!), and he sent me a copy of that. I thoroughly enjoyed reading his account. That book is available here, if you're interested: https://www.standard-triumph-books.co.uk/

And then as a token of our visit this summer, he gave me a copy of his other, earlier book, In the Shadow of My Father, a chronicle of John's and his father's days at Standard Motor Co., from 1921 until the early 70's with the takeover by British Leyland. I recently finished reading the book and John tells a wonderful story, not of the cars necessarily, but of the people. His accounts are both hilarious and poignant, and give fantastic insight into the day-to-day operation of the auto industry back in the day. As I read, I could actually "hear" John telling the story; quite a treat!

Anyway, if you can get your hands on a copy, I highly recommend it. It gave me insight into the world of British cars and their makers that I never knew before. It was self-published by John and Clouds Hill Printers, Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire. I just looked and there's one copy on Amazon.com, at $46 (!). But according to the Standard-Triumph Books website, it is available directly from John: https://www.standard-triumph-books.co.uk/in-the-shadow-of-my-father.php

+1 on "In the Shadow". Great read, wish I could write even half that well.

You oughta hear him in person! Wonderful storyteller; "colorful" doesn't come close to describing...

I agree with both of you! I had only one brief opportunity to meet John in person in the Albany NY area while he was in the earlier stages of the Trans-America run. (I might even be in that book; sorry to say I've not yet purchased same, but I plan to!) Great guy all around, as are all of the former Standard-Triumph folks I've met over the years!
