Using a Tr6 tranny in my TR3 with the TR3 shifter and out of habit yesterday I lifted the shifter to go into reverse. It felt odd when I did that and the tranny would not go into reverse. I think that the anti rattle pin may have come out and jamming it. So should I not lift the shifter to go into reverse? My theory is the original shifter would have gone from side to side and worn a slot across. By lifting the shifter it could have caught the edge of the slot and pulled the pin out. I have not confirmed this. What do you think?

Could something else be missing? Like the cross-bolt that keeps the shift lever from coming up too far?

I have a TR3 shift lever and TR6 shift rails, never had a problem with lifting to go into reverse. Pretty sure that pin is still in there, tho I haven't checked for a long time.

Something is stopping it to fully go into reverse. That's the only thing I could think of. I recently rebuilt the tranny and it worked well just pushing it over to the side until I remembered that I was suppose to lift the shifter on a TR3.

The only way I would see the pin being the culprit is if it didn't allow the shift handle to move far enough into position (clearing the center selector)..I suppose that pin could have dislodged and found it's way in front of the reverse selector end holding the handle too far away to move the selector sufficiently but really kinda doubt it..sounds more like an issue with the selector shaft..pull the cap and spring and you should be able to see down in there..

Same here...not the rattle pin. If the pin came out, it would sit inside the 1-2/3-4 detents, not not the reverse detent. That means you would have gotten reverse just fine, but the shifter would act strange going back into a forward gear. It would sit high and jam between the 2-3 or 3-2 shifts.

That's what happening. It won't allow the gear to fully engage. You can hear the teeth grinding away. Once it went in but with a good pull on the shifter. All I should have to do is lift the carpet and take the boot off and I think the parts should be accessible to remove the cap and spring.
