Re: Otter Switch

Due to the tendency for E types to run hot on hot summer days, I usually convert the Otter switch to a manual controllable switch. The switch on the extreme right of the dash which is an accessory position makes a handy location and a red light to operate as a reminder that the fans are on makes a good system. If you choose to relocate an automatic switch to the rear of the radiator, there are very good aftermarket choices for such a location and they come with a control on the turn on/off temperatures.

OK guys,
Guess I'll have to show my ignorance, since everyone else apparently knows. What is an "Otter switch" & why is it so called?

Re: Otter Switch

Oh, never mind. Ask a stupid question, get a stupid answer. I guess it would be like calling all tissues Kleenex. Kind of peculiar in the somewhat technical fields. Or maybe sort of exclusive? I would think that thermo switch would be more descriptive.
Back to my hole,

Re: Otter Switch

Sorry, Dave. I couldn't resist the obvious cheap shot. I have no idea what an "otter " switch is either. I'm sure I will find out shortly.
I mainly did that for our ex-pat Swede living in Japan.
Maybe I should start a thread about arcane nicknames for parts. I know the aircraft industry has some good ones. Or, perhaps not.
It's been an extremely long day.

Re: Otter Switch

Hi Jeff,
I just told you. A thermostatically operated switch. It is claimed to have been invented by the Otter Company in 1946. I suppose that Jags are still using it.

Re: Otter Switch

I was thinking it was like the trunk monkey thing. Only since it was in a Jag, it had to be a sleeker more agile animal, hence the Otter.

Dang, it is true, TV does rot your brain.

You seem to be holding up the perceived "patronizing stereotype" of the Jag drivers quite well. Guess it just comes with the car ownership.

Re: Otter Switch

Keoke, Recently I found a temperature controllable switch/relay kit from Advanced Auto Parts that goes with their electrical aftermarket fans that is very good quality and a bargain for the price. You can adjust the on/off temperatures and have a very good system. Check it out. Incidently it is not called an Otter switch and I have no idea where the term came from. I work cross-word puzzles and the word Otter stuck in my brain. I thought it might have come from "otter" banks since Australia has a "hotter" climate and would require the application more than Great Britain. If this further adds to the confusion, forget it!!

Re: Otter Switch

Just to add two cents, you have to remember that Jag supplied two different Otter switches. The ones in the E-Type turn ON the fan when the temperature gets high. The ones in the saloons turn OFF the circuit to the Aux Carb when the temp gets high.
