TR4/4A Generator Mounting Hardware

Hello to all,

We're getting closer to having the 1966 TR4A back from frame repair so we can start reassembly. While that work is being done we are doing a lot to get things ready.

We were trial mounting the generator. The new bracket needed some minor modification to get all the holes to line up.

When we were fitting the replacement adjustment arm we noted that the slot was made for a 5/16" through bolt. On this car the generator lug is drilled and tapped for 1/4-28 bolt. That is the size of bolt we removed but Moss sent a 5/16 bolt as a replacement.

Any insights into what we have encountered? Was there a running change to either reduce costs (drill only and no tap) or for a stronger bolt?

Thanks,
Rusty

A friend recently had to replace a broken generator mount and used the Moss item. He too had to modify it in a couple of ways to make it work.

As for the mounting ear on the generator - are you sure it is a threaded 1/4"? Mine on the car and the spare on the shelf have a 5/16" there. I never over-tightened that bolt but do back-it up with a nut on the other side that can be tightened more.

When attaching the adjustment arm be sure to use that special locking tab washer or it will eventually fall off.

That generator frame was used on almost all things British, as well as some things from other places. It's quite possible that the generator, along with the 1/4 inch bolt, came from something else. Tom

Thanks for the guidance and suggestions. It would not surprise me if the generator was a replacement item. It definitely is drilled and tapped for 1/4-28.
