Sideshift gearbox - gasket for side cover

Does anyone know if there is available, by itself, the gasket for the side cover of my 1959 100-6 side shift transmission? I bought the whole packet from Moss, as that's all I could find. It fit somewhat poorly, and then ripped during installation as it's just thin paper stock. Now I need to order another whole pack of gaskets, but would rather order just a side cover gasket if available.

If nothing else is available, I'm going to try and make a better gasket myself once the Moss replacements arrive and I can use them to help in the templating. Any other thoughts you have are welcomed.

Use a copier to transfer the image to what ever paper you want to use. I usually cut down a Manila envelope. Then cut it out, rub some oil on it, and install. Make a few copies, just in case.

Sure you can.

Just get some good quality gasket paper from your local supply house.
Place a piece over the exposed housing and then using a small Ball Peen Hammer gently tap around the outside corners and use the Ball end to punch the bolt hole locations.

Works a treat.-:encouragement:

A bit more of a challenge when the gearbox is still in the car, of course. ;)

I might use the combination of your trick and the replacement gasket to make a template.
I also like the idea of copying it onto more paper as noted by BR above.

I would assume that any cork is too thick for this location. Is there a preferred type of gasket paper that is better than the thin stuff from Moss?

Yes go to an auto parts store there are varying thicknesses of gasket paper. Use a paper type material ,Not cork!

Well pull the gear lever with the cover and use the cover for the pattern-:chuncky:

The thin gasket, as original, allows the correct placement of the shift lever relative to the shifting forks, as well as tension on the springs that control the detention balls.

https://store.healeysurgeons.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc? Here is a link to various gaskets that Healey Surgeons have in stock. I'm sure you can find the part you need by browsing the several pages on inventory. I mis-read the initial inquiry, thinking a shift boot cover was being sought.
The link bring me to their site, but not to any list of gaskets. I looked around their catalog yesterday as well and never did see a gasket with the same part number as referenced in an earlier post.

I suspected as much once I thought about it a while.

Currently I'm waiting to see if the gasket leaks in its current configuration. I suspect it will, and I'm going to order replacements from someone at some time so I'm ready to go.

Go to your local grocery store and ask them to bag your groceries in paper bags . The brown paper bags make perfect gasket paper . Use the cover as a template and either cut it or hammer tap it out . Thin coat of hylomar and it will never leak again .

That's a great idea; never thought of doing that. I wonder is a copier will copy onto actual paper gasket material?

Use Loctite 5699 gasket sealant, it'll close a 1mm gap! It's a miracle substance as all Loctite products tend to be.
