SU fuel pump

After wiring up my rebuilt (by me) SU fuel pump, AUF305 from a 73 Midget it refuses to run. I tested it on the battery before installation after I rebuilt it and it worked without hesitation. Everything looks good, but no joy...should I send it off for a rebuild or buy a new solid state SU? If I send it off, who should I send it to?
Thanks, Rut

Scott,
I removed it from the car and connected it directly to the battery, no joy.

If it worked before, it should work again - walk away from it tonight - go back tomorrow and methodically work your way through.

Perhaps a love tap with a mallet ... just for good measure.

Good luck!

Ah, yes, remember many happy love taps to get the old SU going! A friend carried a short piece of 2X4 just for the "routine". For me in my MGB a good solid whack with my fist on the bulk head would do the trick.

Very sensitive to a little corrosion on the points, Rut. Has the pump been sitting for a while?

The pump is corrosion free and looks like it did after I rebuilt it about a year ago. I'll take it apart and see what's going on, but I really want a trouble free SU pump and if all else fails I'll send it off or buy a new electronic ($$$$ shudder) one.

I had the electronic SU on my MGA and it ran flawlessly. I didn't put the 70K miles I had on my MGB on it though. I always liked the way a SU would re-assuredly pump up pressure then stop. Told you if you had a leak or stuck float needle's or a vapor lock. Also told you when it needed a whack! I replaced mine on the B with a Bendix that is now owned by Facet. It is the Facet gold pump that Facet claims is their most reliable. That Bendix is still running after close to 50 years and way over a hundred thousand miles. A friend owns the car and that pump has been trouble free.

I opened up the pump this morning and everything looks new...connected it to the battery and it ran like a champ. The points are clean, but I'm considering the electronic conversion. Anyone have a good source stateside?
Thanks, Rut

We had a member here at BCF who would do that conversion but I don't remember who it was. Basil probably will know.

Thanks guys, I'm looking for the points conversion kit since everything else has been rebuilt. If it was a pump in bad condition I would send it to Dave for a full conversion and rebuild, but hindsight being what it is...

I bought this SU new and it developed a leak shortly after it was in use. That was a year and a half ago. Since I had a supposedly reliable Facet pump I procrastinated doing anything with the SU and relied on the Facet. Big mistake, it was only good for about 6,000 miles. So I had a car with two bad pumps. Turned out to be a simple fix for the SU and the trash bin for the Facet which is now replaced. And now have the back-up system from Dave Dubois back in operation which is what I started with. https://userwebs.donobi.net/sufuelpumps/Fuel_Pumps/Back_up_Fuel_Pump.pdf
Now I can run until one quits and switch to the other, then drive until the back-up pump quits and be stranded with two pumps that no longer work. Procrastination!
