MGB March 20 - 26 vacation time to work on MGB

I'll be pulling the head, intake & exhaust next week to replace them all.
I have a rebuilt head, a pair of HIF4's and intake manifold as well as the earlier exhaust manifold, down pipe and associated gaskets and fasteners.

One issue is that the head sat out all winter in my shed and it's got some surface rust, I'm thinking of using some Evaporust on the surfaces and then cleaning it off.
Anyone got a better idea?

I plan to post here updating my progress (hopefully) and adding any questions as I run into problems.

So what are you going to do the other 6 days? :highly_amused:

I also have a brand new Robbins top I'd like to install.
:wink-new:

Question: Is there an elegant way to remove cylinder head with intake and exhaust manifolds all at once?
Just wondering if I can simplify, always have carefully removed everything from the head first then unbolted it and pulled it separately before.
Since this head and both manifolds are going away I don't feel I need to preserve them.
Heck I could get in there with a sawzall and cut the exhaust pipe free, undo the cable & water connections from the carb and then I think it would all pull off together.
I have a hoist if I need it.
Crazy idea?

i suppose it's possible, but I think doing it the conventional way is probably easier. The exhaust and intake are just adding more weight to what is already a pretty heavy lump - and that additional weight is off to one side as well. I think that would make pulling the head straight up off the studs pretty difficult. Since you have a hoist, it might be worth a shot...

Yeah you are most likely right and knowing these things seldom just pull straight off without any trouble also makes me think taking the time to do it the conventional way is best.
I'm going to have this thing thought to death before turning a single wrench!

Not saving much by pulling all out as a unit. Will be earlier on you by removing bit by bit.
good luck and have fun!

Concur. Do it a piece at a time. It's very awkward to do it with all the manifold weight on that side. No sense taking the chance of bending/breaking things. There always seems to be a forgotten nut/bolt/wire at risk.
