Trying to replace my overdrive rear seal. I cannot get the flange off the overdrive. Looking for suggestions. Thanks, Bob

Stand the unit on its nose and pour some weasel pee around the splines. Repeat at intervals. Wait a day and try with a puller on the flange. I have THIS rig but you could likely get a rental or loaner from a local parts business.

For those who don't know Doc-speak, weasel pee is a 50/50 mixture of acetone and auto trans fluid.

Too bad for me, the transmission is still in the car ! Would be very difficult to stand it on end.

Ah. Well, PB Blaster aerosol then. Same methodology with the puller. A center screw type to put load on the shaft. Then a BFH and tapping the screw head as you tighten/tension it.

2nd what Doc says. Those pullers are must for any car repair. Put some weasel pee in a oil squirt can with spout, will do the job along with a puller. Just takes patience, determination and close the eyes smacks.

A good pair of safety glasses would be recommended... but still use the "close the eyes smacks" method for luck.

And if you put the weasel pee in a squirt can (use an oil type, the acetone has a tendency to MELT plastic!) remember to shake it before each application.

It's done ! Harbor Freight gear puller did the job. Just barely enough room to get the 4" puller in position. Back of the car was up on ramps so not a lot of working room under there. Tough job getting the old seal out too. Tried a Dremel tool but ended up prying and prying and prying but it's all back together and the proof of my success will be when I start driving it again next week. Thanks, Bob

Just an FYI for those who don't want to buy a puller, or don't have a Harbor Freight nearby....you can borrow a puller for free at your local AutoZone....pay a deposit, and get the deposit back when you return the puller. Lots of other specialty tools as well. (Disclaimer: I work part time at AutoZone).
