Bugeye distributor

My question is: How in the world do you get to the distributor in the Bugeye? It is buried under other components.

It apears that to get to the rotor cap and work on the points, the tach cable has to be removed and the coil has to be removed (or moved), at the very least. Am I right, or am I missing something?

And even when cleared of those items, it seems that there is very little space to work on the points. This is an odd thing because so much else on the car is easily accessed, but here -- the most often worked on unit -- is almost out of reach.

Guidance will be greatly appreciated.

Here is a picture on my old, new, BE.....The tach cable is not installed, but yes, you are right, there is not a lot of space. I do not know what to say, although, in my previous LBCs, I got really tired of setting the point gap and timing the car. I went to Pertronix ignition and it is like the chicken cooker.....set it and forget it. That is what I would recommend. Scott in CA

Many thanks. With the tach cable removed, there is a little more room, but it looks like the coil also has to be moved, or removed, to finish the job. Am I right?

I'd like to stay with the stock distributor if i can.

Coils can vary in their position... and mine isn't exactly where yours is. I didn't find removal difficult at all.

Two things... I flipped the coil around so that the the connection doesn't get in the way of the dizzy, and .. It's much easier if you mount a pointer and notch the pulley so that you can time the car from above. that way you can reach the dizzy at the same time as you look at the light. .. then it's easier to pull the dizzy to set the points on the bench than it is to lean in and try to get it right... ... BUT, electronic (pertronix or crane [i prefer the crane]) is the way to go if you plan to use the car. Set and forget.
