Wet carpet

If I get caught in a heavy rain aside from the usual leaks around the windows and windshield my carpet on the floor of the passenger side gets soaking wet. Have any of you had this problem and how did you solve it?

Make sure the carpet snaps in the floor are installed and sealed with sealing washers

Hi John,
Although I do expect you will find the water may be coming in at the transmission cover as Bob suggested, a friend had a similar issue that drenched more than the rug. When his Healey restoration was completed, one thing they did not do was to put the seal under the blocking plates used to close the openings used for brake and clutch in rt. hand drive cars. Although I can’t remember if they exist, but if there are heater and/or plenum drain tubes, I would look to make sure they are open and extends to the outside.

Don't forget that the water that comes in at the usual places ends up all over the carpet. My car was parked at an event, when spectating, it has a hardtop and good side screens. There was heavy rain during the event and when I returned to the car the carpets were soaking wet and the car had not been driven.

I have found that if your furflex or some other such weather stripping is not in place or in good shape around the door openings then when driving during heavy rain or very wet roads, the rain can be blown from the back of the front wheel across the rocker and bottom edge of the door and quite a bit is blown thru into the car. It easily is enough to soak the carpets.
Of coarse wholes in the floor or footwell area will also soak the carpet quit easily.

John--

It is ironic that cars made in a country known for its damp climate and profusion of rain had such lousy weather protection. You don't say what model Healey you have but even later cars with roll-up windows and pull-up tops have an abundance of leaks. The window/side curtain/door gaskets usually do not fit/compress correctly and sometimes do little more than direct the stream of water to a different place.

As Bob S suggests it sounds like the particular leak you complain of is coming from the windshield wiper posts but I would not spend too much time chasing that leak as if you solve it you will only focus on another. I'd invest in a tyvek cover that can be compressed to the size of a volleyball and kept in the boot so if things get intolerable simply pull over and cover the car, crawling in from the drivers' door. You will stay dry underneath it.

British Car Specialists have a Rare and Hard to find parts catalog.
https://www.britishcarspecialists.com/WebCatalog/
Look under Transmissions/Seals.
There's a seal that fits on the floor pan lip and meets a channel in the gearbox tunnel. I ordered one this week.

What I do is park the car in the sun and leave the windows halfway open. The car interior will warm up and evaporate the water which exits the window openings.
