Side exhaust, which muffler?

Work is progressing really well and amazingly fast on the '73 Midget I bought
a couple of weeks ago. While the existing exhaust system is still intact, not
so sure how long it'll stay that way so I'm considering alternatives. The one I
like best is a side exhaust just in front of the left, rear tire. And I will be using
headers too. This car is being built as a weekend warrior/occasional racer s
don't mind the racket.

Has anyone tried this and if so what did you use for a muffler? Not much room
under these things!

I might try it without a muffler and use a baffle insert.

Truthfully there is no place for a muffler but the stock location. You do not need the dual box, you can use the straight out the back early style.

How about this:

I thought about dumping the exhaust just before the rear wheel on my sprite but had the same concern regarding space. Im running a 12a rotary though so squeezing a decent sized muffler under the car is not likely going to happen. Guess I will have to route it out the back of the car like everyone else.

Thanks for the suggestions guys! Hadn't considered using a motorcycle muff.
I like it and in fact there is a Spridget in the area that uses one (rear mounted). Doesn't sound
like a side exhaust is practical but I will try to mock up something with what I have
available. Will post the results. Just crammed the headers in the engine bay and the outlet
is 2" dia. Bigger than M/C muffs I've seen.

The next Spridget I build will be a radical engine swap (RX7 or Lotus 907) so I'm
thinking about this as I build this mostly stock car. Hope to get together with some
of you guys that have gone down this road.

I am wondering about the space behind the front wheel well - and next to the battery - inside the front fender - where I drop parts when working on the clutch - is there enough space for a top entry, bottom exit or bottom entry top exit?

Possibly. But you'd have to run the pipe up and over, then down to do this. Another thing I'm
looking into is called a 'baffle pipe' which is often used on M/C's. Its just a straight pipe
with some baffles inside. About as small as you can get and I've heard they work quite well
with a minimum of back pressure.
