Despite quite a bit of tweeking, my exhaust seems to still want to bang into the frame where it goes through the centre section of the frame. It only bangs occassionally. I'm thinking that maybe a piece of silicone oven-mitt type material might work as a bumper. Anyone else run into this and found a workable solution? I think the silicone would withstand the temperature and is soft and pliable. Comments, suggestions? Cheers, Mike

I split a piece of fuel line and slip it over the lower lip of the rear opening of the cruciform. Doesn't last forever but does last for a couple of years and only takes a minute to replace when I see that it is breaking up.

When I first purchased my tr3, the exhaust was not totally stock and would rattle. I went with a stock system with the early clamps and that fixed it. I tried welding the old system and moving stuff, but nothing worked. I believe the center clamp is key to getting the rattle to stop.

Mike - I put in a new stainless steel "Falcon" exhaust system in 1990. It vibrated where it passes through the center box as you describe. I did two things.

1. I removed it all and squeezed the pipe in that area with my 6" bench vice. Now that area of the pipe is oval and doesn't hit any more.

2. While it was out I changed the original securing "thingy" for an improved one which is a stock item for a TR4.

While we are on the subject....I'm running the TR3 long muffler only and it sits against the Diffin one spot. Would this create extra heat to the Diff?

Good idea Don, but I'd prefer not to remove the exhaust ... looking for a "quick and dirty" sort of fix right now :smile:

Karl, I guess it might create a bit more heat, but not sure how much extra would get tranferred by contact on one little spot.

I agree with the quick & dirty solution - Silicone oven hot pad. Wrap it around where it contacts.

Three wedges of hardwood driven in the cross box at equal spaces has served me well for three years. Hasn't caught fire yet.

I agree with Don on the improved TR4 center mount, that's what I put on mine. I also used one of those ugly u-bolt style clamps in the center. I could not get the original type to tighten down enough.
